They met each other for the first time at a USWNT camp in 2010. They were friends at first, but there was most definitely an attraction that continued building over time.

Due to the commitments for 2004 FIFA (under 19) Women’s World cup, she couldn’t start training with the Tar Heels’ team for six months.

After the World cup in a training with the team, she broke her right hand thumb and she had to have a surgery due to that injury and inserted three pins in her hand. She couldn’t play for three to four months so she just sat at the bench for that time.

In the summer of 2005, despite the injuries, Ashlyn was still able to make her position at the 

Atlantic Coast Conference

 Academic Honor Roll team for the next year.

After she was recovered from her injuries, she returned to training with Tar Heels in the next spring of 2006 but then again she tore her ACL (

anterior cruciate ligament) in a training for the national team.

Despite the injuries, in the fall of that year, she played six games at the NCAA tournaments including the final championship which was against Notre Dame and the team won with the 2-1 result.

In 2007 season she was diagnosed with a torn labrum in her ribs but then again she didn’t miss any of her games due to that injury and the pain. In that season, Ashlyn played 19 games and she avoided 29 goals (76.3 percent saves) which is a pretty good record.

The next season was the only season that Ashlyn was perfectly healthy for her games. In 2008 season she participated in 27 games and she avoided 28 goals (75.5 percent saves) which was one percent down in comparison to last year.

The 2009 season was the first one that she was the only goalkeeper for the team. She played 25 games and had 45 saves (81.8 percent saves) which was a perfect record for her career. The Tar Heels won the final game of the NCAA tournaments over Stanford with 1-0 result.

I was a bully. I was bullied. I was aggressive.

I was physical. I fought a lot. I would try to find little gangs to get associated with because I wanted a sense of family that I didn't have at home at the time. There was such a separation, and it was like heavy air every time I came home” she said.
