The present article is a list of La Liga football transfers for the summer sale prior to the 2020–21season.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and its effects on sports leagues worldwide, FIFA had announced that the summer transfer window opening date would remain the same under certain conditions regarding original squad involvement.
However, local football federations were allowed to modify the window to their convenience. On 8 June 2020, the RFEF and La Liga agreed to start the window on 4 August and end on 5 October due to the 2019–20 La Liga season concluding on 19 July.
Among all

a few transfers were announced prior to the starting date, but the transferred players were not supposed to become officially part of their new club until the window's opening date.
New signings went on to play the competition with their former club by contract, while they were ready for use at their new club once the tournaments concluded.
All loan spells ending on 30 June 2020 were extended until the rescheduled end of their clubs' respective 2019–20 season.
It should be noted that players without a club can join one at any time, either during or in between transfer windows.
Clubs below La Liga level can also sign players on loan at any time. If needed, clubs can sign a goalkeeper on an emergency loan, if all others are unavailable.

Luis Suarez to Atletico Madrid (€6 million)
Among

is Suarez’s shocking move to Atletico Madrid. The Uruguayan departed Camp Nou after six seasons, in which he tallied 198 goals in 283 games for the club.
Barcelona confirmed that Suarez has joined Atletico Madrid after the two Spanish sides came to terms on a deal for the Uruguayan star.
Atletico will pay Barca €6 million (£5.5m/$7m) to recruit the striker, who departs Camp Nou after six successful seasons with the club.
Suarez was heavily linked with Juventus as the Italian champions have been in the hunt for a striker, but the Bianconeri moved on to other targets after Suarez was forced to go through a lengthy process of acquiring Italian citizenship.
Instead, he headed to Atletico after a stay with Barca that saw him claim 13 trophies while becoming the club's third-highest all-time goalscorer, only after Cesar and Messi.
"FC Barcelona and Atletico Madrid have reached an agreement for the transfer of the player Luis Suarez. The Madrid club will pay FC Barcelona €6 million in variables," the Catalan club announced after the two sides reached an agreement.
"FC Barcelona would like to publicly express their gratitude to Luis Suarez for his commitment and dedication and wishes him all the best for the future."
Suarez originally made the move to Barcelona in 2014, having emerged as a superstar during his time with Liverpool.
He went on to score 198 goals in 283 games for the Blaugrana, earning the Golden Shoe as Europe’s top scorer after scoring 59 total goals in 2015-16.
While at Barca, Suarez won four La Liga titles and a Champions League, as he famously scored against Juventus to secure that European title for Barca.
Suarez joined Diego Simeone's Atletico outfit, giving the club an option up top following the departure of Alvaro Morata, who recently joined Juventus on an initial 12-month loan deal with an option to buy for €45m (£40m/$52m).
Suarez scored 21 goals in 36 games for Barca last season as he battled injury midway through Barca's campaign in what turned out to be his least-prolific season at the Camp Nou.
After arriving in August, new Barcelona head coach Ronald Koeman told Suarez he would not be in his plans for the upcoming season, sealing the 33-year-old's fate at Camp Nou.
It was reported that Suarez broke down in tears while driving away from Barcelona’s training ground ahead of his transfer to Atletico Madrid.
Barcelona's Argentine superstar Lionel Messi criticized his club about Suarez's leave as he thinks that the club board "kicked him out".
"You deserved to depart for who you are: one of the most important players in the club's history, winning things as part of a group and individually. Not for them to kick you out as they have done. But the truth is nothing surprises me anymore," Messi said on his Instagram.
Messi had informed his club that he wanted to leave, but Barcelona did not let him go, refusing his request.
On the other hand, La Liga blocked Messi's free transfer before 2021 and obliged €700 million ($828.2 million) release fee for an immediate departure, which forced the Argentine forward to stay at Barcelona for a final season.
Messi renewed his deal with Barcelona in 2017 and his contract was set to end on June 30, 2021.
Arturo Vidal to Inter Milan

Vidal reunited with Antonio Conte after the pair won three Serie A titles together at Juventus. The Chilean midfielder has called time on his two-year spell at Camp Nou and made his way to San Siro.

news, Arturo Vidal completed a €1 million switch to Inter from Barcelona, making his way back to Italy after a five-year absence.
It was reported that Vidal has committed his future to Inter through to 2022, with the option to extend his stay by an extra year included in the final agreement.
The 33-year-old has been handed a contract worth €6 million (£5.5m/$7m) per year, and will now be tasked with helping Antonio Conte's side try to take the Serie A title away from Juventus.
Inter confirmed his arrival in an official statement via their website on Tuesday, which reads: "Arturo Vidal is officially an Inter player.
"The Chilean midfielder has joined Inter on a permanent deal from FC Barcelona. From today, Vidal will be on the front line for the Nerazzurri, with the same objectives as ever: fighting, giving it his all, and winning.
"He will become the sixth Chilean to play for Inter. The first was Ivan Zamorano, another born fighter. He was followed by David Pizarro, Luis Jimenez, Gary Medel and Alexis Sanchez.
"It’s confirmed. He’s arrived in Milan, and he’s a Nerazzurri player. Welcome to Inter, Arturo!"
Barcelona have communicated the final fee of €1m in their own statement, while wishing Vidal well on his next adventure at San Siro.
The Chile international enjoyed a hugely successful previous stint in Italy with Juventus between 2011 and 2015, before joining up with German champions Bayern Munich.
He spent three years at Allianz Arena before being snapped up by Barca for €20m (£18m/$23m) in the summer of 2018, and extended his run of consecutive league titles to eight during his first full campaign at Camp Nou.
That streak came to an end last season as the Blaugrana were dethroned by Real Madrid in La Liga, with a humiliating 8-2 Champions League defeat by Bayern compounding a miserable year for the club.
Vidal is among the other top players to exit Camp Nou such as Ivan Rakitic, Arthur, Carles Perez, Marc Cucurella, Luis Suarez, and Nelson Semedo.
Lautaro Martinez to Barcelona (€111m release clause)
FC Barcelona were reportedly back in the race to sign Inter Milan’s Lautaro Martinez during the summer window.
Minutes after Luis Suarez had bid a tearful farewell to the club at a special ceremony, and closed the book on a highly successful six-year tenure that yielded 13 major trophies and saw him become their third all-time top scorer, RAC1’s Gerard Romero broke news of the development.
Romero claimed that even though those behind the scenes at the Camp Nou are assured that any approach for the Argentine will be “complicated” in cash-strapped times, hopes of landing the preferred long-term successor to Suarez have been reignited through the 33-year-old’s exit and that of several other players.
Following their 8-2 loss to Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarterfinals, Barça have carried out a massive overhaul with a view to getting back to winning ways.
The first port of call was to fire head coach Quique Setien, who was swiftly replaced at the helm by Dream Team Legend Ronald Koeman.
Telling the likes of Suarez, Ivan Rakitic, and Arturo Vidal that they did not feature in his plans for the upcoming 2020/2021 campaign, this trio of highly-paid stars have all been offloaded to clear the payroll.
Furthermore, the €30mn plus €10mn in variables sale of Nelson Semedo to Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League PINC +0.4% has also freed up much-needed funds following a €300m loss during the coronavirus pandemic.
Prior to the three-month pause imposed on La Liga, Martinez was Barça’s top target and activating his €111mn release clause seemed straightforward.
Falling on hard times, however, the Blaugrana have since been forced to offer part-exchange deals that failed to entice Inter Milan but can now return to the negotiating table with the transfer window set to close on October 5.
In allowing Suarez to walk to a domestic rival in Atletico Madrid, the Catalans do not currently boast and out-and-out striker despite insistences that either Antoine Griezmann or Ansu Fati can operate up top in a 4-2-3-1 if Lionel Messi is not deployed as a false 9.
Elsewhere, rumors continue to circle that proposals are being made for Lyon’s Memphis Depay, who Koeman once oversaw as Netherlands national team manager.

Ivan Rakitic to Sevilla (€1.5m plus 9m)
Another La Liga summer transfer window of 2020-21 included the Croatia midfielder Ivan Rakitic’s leaving the club to rejoin Sevilla from Barcelona on a four-year deal.
Rakitic joined the La Liga side where he played from 2011-2014, prior to his move to the Nou Camp. He enjoyed a trophy-laden six-year spell at Camp Nou.
Barcelona said in a statement, "The Andalusian team will pay FC Barcelona 1.5m euros plus 9m in variables.
"FC Barcelona publicly expresses its gratitude to Rakitic for his commitment and dedication and wishes him good luck and success in the future."
But, how did a player who reportedly attracted an offer of €90 million end up being sold for €1.8 million, plus 9 in variables, roughly 24 months later?
Rakitic ended the 2019/20 season as the 13th Barcelona player with most minutes in all competitions. He played both Champions League last 16 legs against Napoli, and he experienced a renaissance after the coronavirus break.
But with everyone fit and available, the Swiss-born player was still not among the eleven starters regularly. With the rejuvenation the squad desperately needed, Rakitić was always going to be one of the first names in the list. His exit has now been certified.
For a star that could have been sold for 90 or 80 million euros only two years ago, being transferred for 1.5 and 9 in add-ons seems a too sharp decline. Barcelona even considered releasing him on a free in order to avoid paying his high salaries.
However, no one can say that Barcelona have done bad business with Rakitić overall. The player now finds himself at the same club where he was over six years ago, but the period in between cannot be overlooked.
Rakitic established himself as one of his generation’s best and most successful midfielders at Camp Nou.
