A wonderful gesture at St. James’ Park

Newcastle and Everton players drink water and break their fast during an English Premier League match

The heated confrontation between Newcastle United and Everton took place on Tuesday, on the field of St. James’ Park, as part of the thirty-first round of the English Premier League, a moment that deserves contemplation and appreciation.

The prominent scene during the first half of the match, which ended in a positive draw with a goal for each team, was when the referee decided to stop the game just before the call to Maghrib prayer, in order to give the Muslim players of both teams the opportunity to break their fast.

The Muslim players quickly headed towards the touchline, the majority of them from Newcastle United, where they calmly and slowly drank water and juices, in order to break their fast and meet their nutritional needs.

This distinctive scene did not go unnoticed by the English media, which praised the team spirit and solidarity embodied in that moment, especially with the presence of a large number of Muslim players who gathered to break their fast together.

This moment is a prominent example of respect, tolerance, and mutual understanding among players in a diverse sports environment, and it confirms the spirit of harmony and positive coexistence in the world of football.

The English Premier League allows Muslim players to retain the right to break their fast during matches at the time of Iftar, where the game is stopped for a few minutes to meet the needs of the players.

On the other hand, the French League takes a different stance on this issue on its territory, which agrees with the position of the National Football Federation in France, which prohibits breaking the fast during matches in all age categories of players.
