Mallorca 0-1 Barcelona: Barca tops LaLiga thanks to Lewa's brilliance

Robert Lewandowski has quickly adapted to La Liga, as another clinical goal was enough to defeat Real Mallorca.

Robert Lewandowski

set a LaLiga record with his ninth goal of the season, which handed

a 1-0 victory over

Real Mallorca

and propelled

's squad to the LaLiga summit.

Lewandowski's game-winning goal made him the fastest player in the 21st century to reach nine goals in the Spanish top flight; he now has nine goals in just seven games since arriving from

Bayern Munich

Real Madrid can regain the lead when they meet Osasuna on Sunday, but the sight of Barcelona at the top of the table, although briefly, suggests a furious title race. There was much to please coach Xavi, including Ansu Fati's first domestic league appearance of the season, even if his squad had to settle for a narrow victory.

Lewandowski gave Barcelona the lead in the 20th minute after receiving a pass from Ansu Fati and racing in on goal from the left flank. He brilliantly cut back onto his right foot to create space before unleashing a low, powerful shot into the far corner.

Shortly thereafter, the Pole had a second opportunity, but he could not capitalize after Sergio Busquets picked him out with a smart first-time ball. Antonio Sanchez's doggedness on the right wing allowed Jaume Costa to test

Marc-Andre ter Stegen

as Mallorca came close to equalizing.

Sanchez's stinging cross-shot caused Ter Stegen to make another save just after the half, while Franck Kessie's 25-yard effort following superb work by Fati went just wide. Kessie and Fati were replaced midway through the half by Pedri and Raphinha, highlighting Barcelona's depth.

Pedri, Gavi, and

came close to combining for a fantasy goal, but Barcelona did not require a second goal. On Tuesday, Barcelona will face Inter in the Champions League before defeating Celta Vigo in La Liga. Mallorca will next compete on October 10 against Elche.
