Rangers close to appointing Giovanni van Bronckorst as new manager

Giovanni van Bronckhorst is close to finalizing a deal to become Rangers’ new manager.

The former

Rangers

full-back held talks on Saturday with the club and again on Tuesday and seems that he is nearing a return to Ibrox to replace

Steven Gerrard

, who departed for

Aston Villa

.

The Dutchman is now a free agent after quitting his most recent post in China with

Guangzhou R&F

for family reasons. He previously led

Feyenoord

for four years, winning the Eredivisie title and two domestic cups.

Team B coaches

David McCallum

and

Brian Gilmour

, along with goalkeeping coach

Colin Stewart

and player-coach

Jermain Defoe

will lead Rangers when they face

Hibernian

in the League Cup semi-finals on Sunday.

Following that encounter, Rangers will play

Sparta Prague

in the Europa League at Ibrox before traveling to

Livingston

and Hibernian in the league.

Rangers are currently sitting at the top of the Scottish Premiership after 13 matches, four points ahead of rivals

Celtic

in second.
