Espirito Santo hopes for Spurs improvement after international break

Tottenham have struggled to maintain consistency with their performances under the newly appointed boss.

Nuno Espirito Santo replaced Jose Mourinho at Tottenham earlier this summer after the Spurs ended their extended search for a new manager. The Portuguese coach has struggled to maintain consistency with Tottenham’s performances so far this season, but he hopes his side can regain their best form after the international break.

"In simple terms, I think we started well, then we did not perform so well,"

he told

Sky Sports

.

"We had a big problem after the international break, we were not able to sustain it, and now we are trying to recover. I was really happy with the Villa performance.”

The Spurs are currently eighth in the Premier League, having collected 12 points from seven matches. Espirito Santo's side defeated Aston Villa with a 2-1 result in their last game before the international break, reviving the fans’ hopes of seeing an improved side in the coming weeks.

He added:

"It has been up and down but I think we were able to recover that sense of what we wanted from the team against Villa. It was a very good game. But now, another international break, it is a new cycle coming. A tough schedule, a lot of games away from home.

"When you have this kind of schedule, you have to improve the team during the competitions. The training ground is all about recovering. They cannot be afraid of making mistakes on the pitch.

"Mistakes are going to happen."

Tottenham will face Newcastle in their next Premier League match on Sunday, before meeting

Vitesse

in a Europa Conference League game four days later.
