A late winner from Rodrygo secured Real Madrid a precious victory at Inter yesterday as Inter coach Simone Inzaghi said he was ‘sorry for the club, the fans and the players’ as his men had a host of chances but didn’t manage to beat Thibaut Courtois.

The game appeared to be heading for a draw after both teams spurned good chances over the course of the contest. However, Rodrygo was in the right place at the right time to steer a left-footed volley past Samir Handanovic as

the Los Blancos defeated Inter 1-0 in their opening Champions League match

“We had to pay more attention, there was a minute to go,”

 Inzaghi told

“Let’s look ahead, let’s think about how we held our ground against Real Madrid.

“I asked the team for personality and courage, which we had. But we faced a goalkeeper who was difficult to beat.

“I’m sorry for the club, the fans and the players who gave everything. Against these teams you cannot lower your concentration, but playing like this, I’m confident we will qualify.”

Echoing his manager’s words,

Lautaro Martinez

“We deserved a lot more. We know how tough the Champions League is and who we were playing against.

“If you don’t score, the defeat can arrive at any moment. You can’t afford anything against teams like Real.

“Now, we must think about working. We have to improve where we went wrong, without forgetting all the good things we have done.

“We have to keep it with us and work more.”
