Messi receives Newell’s offer when Barcelona contract expires

The Argentina international is expected to sign a renewal contract with the Blaugrana soon, but it did not prevent his boyhood club from making an offer.

Newell’s Old Boys

approached

Lionel Messi

to convince him to join them when his contract with

Barcelona

reached its end.

The Argentine is a free agent now, with his contract expired on Wednesday, but not long after, Newell’s stepped in with a proposal for the 34-year-old.

"

Hi Leo, are you there? In Argentina it is just now July 1 ... [Nothing ventured nothing gained]"

Newell's tweeted.

The invitation was veiled only 24 minutes after midnight in Argentina, with Messi’s picture wearing a Newell’s shirt.

Maradona was Messi’s idol and he wore the 1993-94 Newell’s top. Messi wore the legend’s number 10 underneath his Barca kit in the battle against Osasuna, where it was revealed as he met the back of the net in a 4-0 win.

The forward was in the Newell’s youth system before he joined Camp Nou in 2001; however, his return seems unlikely.

Juan Laporta has been working on convincing Messi to pen a new contract with Barcelona, where he played all his senior club football.

However, before confirming any new deal, Barcelona must overcome some hurdles, with staying within spending limits being one of them.
