McTominay: I’m perfectly fine with No.39

’s number is 39 since he broke into the senior set-up at

, and the 24-year-old does not plan to change it, notwithstanding many iconic numbers being available.

The Scotland international, who is a Manchester United academy graduate, was given his big break by Jose Mourinho. He has featured in 133 matches and has had a crucial role in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s ploys.

When he was asked if he would change the number during a Q&A, McTominay replied:

"No.39 obviously is special, when you first get your number.

"Nobody has ever said change your number – there’s not been a single conversation about changing my number. Not three years, two years or a year ago. 

"Nothing has ever been said about it. I’m perfectly fine with that. I’ve never even asked myself and never thought or brought it up in conversation to change my number. I’m perfectly fine, so 39. I see 39 everywhere now, I can’t get it out of my head!"

He is now, however, wearing number 10 and he wore 39 during the 2015-16 season.

Numbers 1 to 11 are currently filled; however, Juan Mata has not yet penned a new deal and No.8 may be available, whereas No.4 Phil Jones’ future is up in the air as well.

Of the numbers up for grab are 12, 14, 15, and 20, but 16 seems to best fit a player like McTominay, as some legendary midfielders have worn it.

Roy Keane, who has contributed to seven Premier League title grabs, wore No.16 for 12 months. It was then given to Michael Carrick for another year as he won five top-flight titles as well as a Champions League trophy.
