Roma reach an agreement over appointing Jose Mourinho

Roma confirmed that Jose Mourinho will be appointed as their new manager before the next campaign starts.

Jose Mourinho

was relieved of his responsibilities at

Tottenham

after 17 months of being at the helm as he failed to deliver good results during the second half of the 2020-21 season. He left the Premier League club when they were sitting seventh on the table.

Mourinho is one of the world’s most decorated managers. During his spell at Manchester United, he led the team to League Cup and Europa League victories. However, he was sacked from the Old Trafford in December 2019 as they fell 19 points adrift of the League champions Liverpool, despite spending £400 million in the transfer market.

However, Mourinho has had successful spells at Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan and Real Madrid. The Portuguese tactician has now agreed to put pen to paper with the

Serie A

club,

Roma

, who will consider his appointment a coup.

The club’s statement read:

“The club are delighted to announce an agreement has been reached with Jose Mourinho for him to become our new head coach ahead of the 2021-22 season.”

Roma have previously pronounced that Paulo Fonseca will depart when the season ends. After holding discussions with Mourinho, they finally reached an agreement that will keep the 58-year-old manager until the end of the 2023-2024 season.

Mourinho said:

“Thank you to the Friedkin family for choosing me to lead this great club and to be part of their vision.

“After meetings with the ownership and Tiago Pinto, I immediately understood the full extent of their ambitions for AS Roma. It is the same ambition and drive that has always motivated me and together we want to build a winning project over the upcoming years.

“The incredible passion of the Roma fans convinced me to accept the job and I cannot wait to start next season.

“In the meantime, I wish Paulo Fonseca all the best and I hope the media appreciate that I will only speak further in due course. Daje Roma!”
