UEFA's Directive Limits Players’ Communication with Officials to Enhance Respect and Clarity
UEFA is implementing a new rule at the upcoming European Championship in Germany to reduce the abuse directed at referees. Traditionally, players often crowd around officials to contest contentious decisions, despite existing cautions for dissent. UEFA's managing director of refereeing, Roberto Rosetti, emphasized the immense pressure and scrutiny referees face, with each decision being analyzed from multiple angles by fans and pundits. He highlighted that referees make between 200 to 250 decisions per match, approximately one every 22 seconds, making it crucial to maintain clear and respectful communication.
To address this, only team captains will be allowed to speak with referees on the field. Any other player attempting to approach or communicate with the referee risks receiving a yellow card. Rosetti urged teams to ensure that only captains engage with referees to facilitate effective communication and maintain the integrity of the game. If a goalkeeper is the team captain, an outfield player can be designated to communicate with the referee. As England prepares to face Serbia in their
Euro2024 opener, star striker Harry Kane, who is expected to lead the team, hopes that these new regulations will help maintain a respectful atmosphere on the pitch.
