Chelsea 2–0 Dortmund: With a Little Help From VAR!

After ending their 6-game losing strike with a 1-0 victory over Leeds United, Chelsea was hopeful to continue their form by overturning the 1-0 deficit against Borussia Dortmund in their Champions League round of 16 fixture on Tuesday.

Chelsea hosted a Dortmund side that was enjoying great form, sitting jointly at top of the Bundesliga table with Bayern Munich as well as winning the first leg of their Champions League fixture against the Blues thanks to a goal by Karim Adeyemi.

The game started with a delay as Dortmund dominated most of the possession. Their best chance came from an excellent free-kick from Reus, which was saved by Kepa. However, it was Chelsea who scored the long-sought opener through Raheem Sterling in the 43rd minute after dominating the last quarter-hour of the first half.

Chelsea was awarded a penalty early in the second half after Chilwell's cross was deflected back at him by Wolf's arm. Kai Havertz took the penalty and initially hit the woodwork. However, VAR ordered the penalty to be repeated because Dortmund players rushed into the penalty box early. Kai Havertz converted the second penalty in the 53rd minute. Bellingham had a great chance in the 58th minute from the 6-yard box.

Dortmund failed to break into the Premier League side’s defense as Chelsea proceeded to the quarter-final with a 2-0 victory at Stamford Bridge.
