Manchester City "surprised" by Premier League rules breach allegations

Manchester City has released a statement following charges made by the Premier League on Monday.

The English club says they are '

surprised

' by Premier League allegations, but they welcome review by an independent commission.

Manchester City

has been charged by the Premier League for numerous breaches of financial rules.

The

Premier League

announced on Monday that they have referred a series of alleged offences to an independent commission, with charges spanning from the 2009/2010 season until 2018. They also have accused City of not co-operating, since the investigation started in December 2018.

Charges by the Premier League relate to financial information, profitability and sustainability, player and manager remuneration, failure to cooperate, and UEFA regulations.

Man City could face various punishments that include point deductions and even possible relegation, if charges proved.

"Manchester City FC is surprised by the issuing of these alleged breaches of the Premier League rules, particularly given the extensive engagement and vast amount of detailed materials that the EPL has been provided with,"

a statement read.

"The club welcomes the review of this matter by an independent commission, to impartially consider the comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence that exists in support of its position.

"As such we look forward to this matter being put to rest once and for all.”

Manchester City got a two-year ban from the UEFA Champions League for breaking Financial Fair Play rules in 2020, but it was overturned following an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Manchester City has won six Premier League titles since the Abu Dhabi takeover.
