A court in Madrid rules in favor of the European Super League, ordering FIFA and UEFA to stay away

Barcelona and Real Madrid hopes of restarting the Super League were boosted as a Madrid court supports their argument.

Madrid's Audiencia Provincial Civil court has issued an injunction which prevents UEFA and FIFA from punishing European Super League clubs.

The key players in the European Super League (ESL) project have been

Real Madrid

,

Barcelona

and

Juventus

as they remain the only clubs to not resign from the supposed competition and they all have been constantly threatened with punishment ever since the ESL’s announcement in April 2021.

The Madrid court said on Tuesday:

"The problem is that the risk that exists of the arbitrary use by FIFA and UEFA of its disciplinary power does not adhere to the repercussion of its effects within the competitions they manage, but it can also be used, as it is clear that it has been threatened with doing so, to discourage any purpose of the operators of the market who are tempted to build relationships with the competitor."

It added:

"The eventual justification of the conduct of FIFA and UEFA as an attempt to protect the European sports model we consider it, prima facie, as a flimsy excuse."

Despite the decision, there are huge doubts if the other 9 clubs that were in the mix, get involved with the project again. These clubs were Premier League’s “Top 6”, 3 from La Liga and 3 from Serie A.

A22 Sports Management, which was set up to manage ESL, has responded to the court’s decision, as its CEO Bernd Reichart stated:

"It confirms that UEFA's monopoly position cannot be used to pressure or threaten clubs, players or companies willing to innovate and invigorate competition in professional football.

"We will therefore continue our dialogue with football stakeholders in a new and more appropriate environment, free from threats and other obstructive steps taken by UEFA and other bodies."
