Napoli 2-1 AS Roma: Simeone scores a late winner as Napoli rocket towards the scudetto

The Special One failed to secure any points despite AS Roma putting up a good fight in Naples.

Even Jose Mourinho’s Roma wasn’t able to stop the Napoli train as they hurdle towards their first Serie A title in over 3 decades.

Napoli went into the match being 10 points clear of second-placed Inter with a game in hand while Roma was hunting a top 4 spot with them only a point behind third place Lazio.

Spaletti’s men started the match in the same 4-3-3 setup that we’ve seen them in all season while Mourinho opted for a more cautious 3-4-3 formation.

Despite

Napoli

’s blistering form so far, Mourinho’s men didn’t cower in the first half and created some threats on Meret’s goal early on, but Napoli responded in kind as their lethal duo Kvaratskhelia and Osimhen combined again, resulting in Osimhen scoring a stunner from Kvarastkhelia’s cross.

Roma locked the game down with the hopes of getting back into the game in the second half which they did as Mourinho made a couple of vital changes, bringing in El Shaarawy to replace Spinazzolla who had a poor first half.

As the second half went on,

Roma

grew bolder and finally managed to score in the 75th minute as El Shaarawy found the back of the net on a cross from Zalewski.

It was apparent that Roma was content with a point as they wanted to lock the game down but Spaletti’s decision to replace Osimhen with Giovanni Simeone immediately after conceding paid dividends as the Argentine managed to score in the 86th minute with a beautiful left-footed strike. From then on the game turned physical as the tensions between the two teams grew but Napoli managed to see off the game, bagging yet another 3 points against a tough opponent.

Despite not being as dominant as usual, Napoli managed to defeat Roma, moving 13 points clear of Internazional at the top of the table with 53 points, moving ever closer to their third scudetto title.
