Barcelona to offer Marcos Alonso a new contract

Xavi made it clear he is happy with his squad sitting at top of the La Liga table this January, and now the Blaugrana is ready to offer their summer acquisition a new one-year contract.

As part of the deal for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Chelsea sent defender

Marcos Alonso

to Barcelona last summer. Impressing during his spell at

Barca

, the Spanish left-back has shown his versatility by regularly filling in as a centre back.

Now according to

Sport

, with the Spaniard's contract due to expire this summer, Xavi has given green light for his contract extension for another year. During his six years with the Blues, he won the Premier League, the FA Cup, and the Champions League.

Real Madrid's Castilla academy gave birth to Alonso, but he only played one game for the club before he moved to England in 2010. His contract with Chelsea was not renewed after they signed Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, so his time in Stamford Bridge came to an end when he joined Barcelona.

He is the second defender to join the team at the end of the transfer window. Hector Bellerin came from Arsenal, where his contract had also been cut short.
