Courtois calls for handball rules to be changed after Real Madrid loses to Villarreal

An Alaba handball was the decider in Real Madrid’s match against Villarreal, but Courtois thinks it wasn’t a penalty

Villarreal stunned Real Madrid as they beat the mighty Los Blancos 2-1. Yeremy Pino opened Villarreal’s account on the day, before the match was equalized by Karim Benzema from the penalty spot. However, a controversial VAR decision on a David Alaba handball, gave a penalty to Villarreal who went on to score and win the match 2-1.

However,

Thibaut Courtois

fervently denied that the handbal was a penalty:

"The handballs are open to interpretation and it's tough,"

Courtois told Movistar.

"David [Alaba] had his hand on the floor, he's trying to get up. He fell and it's his supporting hand. I don't know what the rule is, I've never seen an example like that. Let's see if next summer they come to talk to us and explain it. If you give a debatable penalty to them, where I think [Foyth] didn't see the ball, you give that one too. It's a kind of compensation."

Despite Courtoi’s remarks, Madrid boss

Carlo Ancelotti refused to lay the blame on the ref and VAR

and instead blamed his own players for underperforming. Regardless of whom the blame falls onto, Barcelona now have the perfect chance to widen the gap between them and Real Madrid to 3 points at the top of the table.
