Benfica president says he will only sell Enzo Fernandez if release clause met

Benfica president, Rui Costa, insists that they would not sell World Cup winner Enzo Fernandez for anything lower than his release clause.

After impressive performances at the World Cup for Argentina, Europe's top clubs are monitoring the situation of

Benfica

’s midfielder

Enzo Fernandez.

Top Premier League clubs including

Liverpool

, Manchester United, Chelsea, and Newcastle have been linked with him in recent days. Reports in Portugal recently suggested that Benfica already has rejected an offer of 100 million euros.

The 21-year-old midfielder joined Benfica from River Plate last summer and has a £105 million release clause. Benfica president Rui Costa has said that they only will think about selling Fernandez if they receive an offer of €120m.

"We don't want to sell Enzo Fernandez in January, but we are willing to satisfy the boy in the event of an offer of €120m,"

Costa told DAZN.

Benfica manager Roger Schmidt also admitted Enzo Fernandez could leave the club in January.

"You always run the risk of losing players [in January],"

Schmidt said.

"I can't reveal our conversations. When I talk to the players, these are things I keep to myself. What I can say is what I've already said. We all know what football is like. These young players have opportunities, not just Enzo. If they have opportunities, they need to make decisions and I respect them.

"I can advise them, but they only have one career. If I can convince them or influence them in a certain way, I try to do it, but I will accept their decisions."
