Tunisia 1-0 France: A Miracle That Wasn't Enough

Failing to score in any of their opening games, Tunisia needed more than a miracle against France to proceed to the next level as they had only gathered one point before their meeting while France wanted to maintain a 100% victory record in the group stage.

Didier Deschamps

decided to rest some of his key players in their final Qatar 2022 group game as Griezmann, Mbappe, Giroud, and Lloris were benched while other French stars got a chance to shine. On the other end,

Tunisia

needed a draw from the other match while a win over the reigning World Cup champions could magically send them to the next round of the tournament.

France

looked like a shadow of their usual selves in the first half while Tunisia failed to threaten disjointed France. Still, they scored once through Ghandri's volley in the game which was flagged offside as the two sides settled on a 0-0 draw for the first half.

However, it was Wahbi Khazri who scored the match's opener as well as Tunisia's first goal in Qatar 2022 as the Frenchmen tried to regather to answer. The result could send the African side to the next round only if Australia didn’t win the other match of the group against Denmark. Antoine Griezmann almost scored the opener for France but VAR intervened to rule out his 98th-minute equalizer due to offside as the game ended with a 1-0 victory for Tunisia.
