Portugal 3-2 Ghana: Ronaldo makes World Cup history in five-goal thriller

Portugal starts their World Cup campaign with a 3-2 win against Ghana at Stadium 974 on Thursday.

Portugal

is next in action against Uruguay on Monday, while

Ghana

takes on South Korea on the same day.

Ronaldo

scored in the 31st minute but it was disallowed for a foul on the Ghana defender.

The first half finished goalless between Portugal and Ghana. The best chances of the game fell to Ronaldo but he failed to find the back of the net. Portugal dominated the game but lacked the cutting edge in the final third to make it count.

Ronaldo put his side ahead in the 65th minute from the penalty spot after he was brought down by Salisu in the penalty area. He became the first male player to score at five World Cups.

Ghana's Andre Ayew equalised in the 73rd minute. Kudus made a great run behind the Portugal defense. He put a low cross into the middle that Ayew attacked and managed to put the ball into the back of the net in the six-yard box.

Portugal regained the lead five minutes later after Felix calmly finished past Ati-Zigi after Fernandes' pass split Ghana's defence.

Rafael Leao scored his first goal for Portugal in the 80th minute, just three minutes after coming on the pitch. Leao curled home a strike from the inside-left channel from another Fernandes assist.

Bukari scored the second goal for Ghana with a header in the 89th minute. They were close to scoring another goal in the last few seconds after the goalkeeper dropped the ball at his feet and Williams stole it but he slipped and Portugal's defenders managed to clear the ball.
