David De Gea is set to miss the World Cup

The Manchester United’s stopper seems to be not in Luis Enrique’s plans for the World Cup since he hasn’t made it onto Enrique’s provisional squad

Just weeks before the 2022 winter World Cup in Qatar it has been revealed by the Spanish publication AS that David De Gea won’t make it to Spain’s final squad for the tournament since he is not in Enrique’s 55-man provisional squad as of yet.

The provisional squad seemingly includes 5 goalkeepers, with

David De Gea

being the possible 6th choice for the role. The

United

keeper has had 45 caps to his name but he famously had a horrid display at the 2018 World Cup and subsequently played second fiddle to Unai Simon at the Euro 2020.

Enrique seems to prefer keepers who have better ball-playing qualities and alongside Unai Simon has included,

Kepa Arrizabalaga

, David Soria, David Raya and Robert Sanches in his provisional squad, many of whom has had better form than De Gea as of late.

Speaking in June about the qualities that he looks for in a goalkeeper, Luis Enrique has stated:

“I look to have three starting goalkeepers and I think that right now I have them.

“Honestly. I wouldn’t have an issue with any of the three of them starting.

“Unai has accumulated some interesting experience. A goalkeeper should start the play and generate the first superiority, they must dominate the aerial play.

“I need a goalkeeper that transmits peace and calmness to me, that doesn’t mean they won’t make mistakes, errors are part of football. What they generate I like a lot.”
