Guardiola assesses Walker and Philips injuries ahead of World Cup

Gareth Southgate may have a selection headache ahead of the World Cup, choosing his best squad, and Pep Guardiola thinks that both Phillips and Walker hope to find themselves in that final squad.

With talks of a 55-player preliminary squad for England, England fans were wondering if players like Phillips and Walker, who might just make it in time to be included in that list will be on Southgate’s radar or not. Pep Guardiola certainly thinks so despite the limited time both players have to build up fitness.

Speaking on the press conference before the Leicester match, Guardiola said: “

They are better, I think they are getting better, Kalvin especially, but they are out. Until after the World Cup, they will not be ready [for

City

]."

He clarified

Phillips

’ situation further by adding:

“His mobility in the shoulder is perfect. He’s started to train in contact with the ball. He has to avoid contact with teammates but he’s really well. We’re surprised at how quick his development [has been].

“If he’s fit then I believe he can play [at the World Cup]. If he’s ready he can maybe take minutes [for City before] but I don’t know right now. We’ll see."

Both

Walker

and Phillips played a big role for England in the Euro 2020 but it may be that Southgate will be without two of his most important players which will add to his woes, especially since a player like Reece James won’t be able to make it to the tournament as well.
