Arsenal thrash Lyon 5-1 in Women’s Champions League

The Gunners vanquished Lyon 5-1 in the Women’s Champions League clash on Wednesday with the current champions conceding five goals for the first time in their history.

Lyon suffered a thumping defeat of 5-1 at the hands of Arsenal at home in their Women’ Champions League opener on Wednesday. The Gunners won the game courtesy of goals from Beth Mead, Caitlin Foord and Frida Leonhardsen-Maanum, sealing their side’s victory. Mead and Foord scored braces, while Leonhardsen-Maanum scored one goal. Lyon did manage to find the back of the net once, but it was far from enough to help them turn things around.

Lyon, who won the Champions League eight times, have conceded five goals at home for the first time in their history. The previous time they conceded a lot of goals was back in 2005 when they lost the clash against CNFE Clairfontaine with the same scoreline.

The English club will continue to keep their run of unbeaten games in the Women’s Super League clash on Sunday as well, when they lock horns with Liverpool. Following that, they will get ready to take on Zurich in the Champions League.
