Conte fires warning to Son and insists he is no longer untouchable

Son Heung-min has long been one of the first names on the team sheet at Tottenham, but Antonio Conte suggests he could benefit from a rest.

Antonio Conte

thinks it would be better for

Tottenham

if

Son Heung-min

didn't play in every game but in a few games at a time. Son has played at least 40 games in all competitions in his seven seasons with Spurs. Only in his first season in England did he start fewer than 30 games.

The South Korean forward has started all seven games for his club this season, but he hasn't scored yet and has only set up one goal. With the offseason signing of

Richarlison

and the January arrival of Dejan Kulusevski, Conte seems to have enough depth to leave Son off his team, given how poorly he has been playing.

The Tottenham coach could do this on Tuesday at Sporting CP in the

Champions League

, but his team has had more time to recover since their game against Manchester City was moved because of the death of Queen Elizabeth II. Conte said, "The postponed game gives me a chance to make a different choice. I want to put Son, Richarlison, Kulusevski, and Harry Kane on the same team."

"I would have played with different players against Man City, but now I've changed my mind." But when asked if Son might be left out at some point, the coach said, "I think when you try to build something important, with ambition and try to be competitive and win, you have to change old habits. Otherwise, you stay in balance and you don't want to have ambition."

"Because of this, all players must understand that rotation is a part of this. We have four players up front, and it's hard to drop one of them right now. Sometimes I have to make the best choice for the players. There are times when it's better to come in for 20 or 30 minutes. I'm here to break the pattern. The players were used to playing all the time, so they kept doing it. Big clubs have a big squad. We don't have a big team, but this process has just begun."
