Liverpool's Sepp van den Berg signs new deal and joins Schalke on loan

Liverpool defender Sepp van den Berg has joined Schalke on a loan deal.

Liverpool

has announced defender

Sepp van den Berg

has signed a new long-term contract with the club and has joined

Schalke 04

on a loan deal for the rest of the 2022-23 season.

The Netherlands youth international joined Liverpool in the summer of 2019 and spend the last two seasons in the Championship with Preston North End.

"I was really happy when I heard Schalke were interested in me,"

the former Preston North End loanee stated.

"I will [take this chance] with complete conviction.”

“My final, decisive factor was the talks I had with Rouven Schröder and Frank Kramer. They really excited me with the suggestions they had for the path I could take here. That is what really convinced me.”

“We are very happy that Sepp has decided to join us despite interest from other clubs. In Sepp, we have gained a fast, tough, and strong central defender who will liven up the competition in the squad, just as we had planned following Malick Thiaw’s departure,”

said Schalke sporting director Schröder.

The 20-year-old player was named on the substitutes’ bench for the opening four Premier League games, amid Liverpool’s injury woes in defense.
