World Cup not for fans - Flick criticizes Qatar 2022

The World Cup 2022 has had many controversies and Hansi Flick is the most recent major figure to weigh in on the competition in Qatar.

Hansi Flick

believes the World Cup in Qatar is not “for fans” but thinks “football should be for everyone.”

The tournament has been filled with controversies since it was awarded to Qatar in 2010. Their belief towards women and the LGBTQ+ community was regarded as a problem, while during the preparations for the final, reports were released of thousands of migrants having been found dead.

Since Qatar has limited accommodation facilities and the move to the middle of the European club season has become a problem for fans and players, which is now more than those moral issues.

Flick also supported the criticism behind the 2022 World Cup.

"Basically, I think it is a shame that this tournament will not be a World Cup for fans,"

he told the Frankfurter Rundschau.

"[I have friends] who would like to fly to Qatar, but choose not to for a variety of reasons. Football should be there for everyone. That is why I say it is not a World Cup for fans."

But Flick thought making a direct political statement of protest was "a challenge for everyone involved", adding:

"We have already had many discussions.

"We will sit down again in September and consider what we can do together with other nations – or want to do."

After replacing

Joachim Low

at

Germany

national team, Flick will take his side to a major tournament. They will lock horns with Japan, Spain, and Costa Rica in Group E, with their first game coming on November 23.
