Everton signs Lille's wonderkid Amadou Onana for £33.5m

Although West Ham had a deal agreed with Lille, the player opted to join the Toffees as the Belgian 20-year-old midfielder became their fifth summer signing. Everton is also trying to bring Idrissa Gana Gueye back to the club.

Everton officially announced the £33.5m signing of the Belgian midfielder

Amadou Onana

from Lille. The player joins toffee on a five-year deal as they hijacked the teenager from

West Ham

. Onana made 32 appearances in the Ligue 1 last term, scoring a goal.

"I know it's a big, big club, one of the biggest in England,"

Onana told

Evertontv

. "It's something I want to be part of for many years.

"Everyone here showed they really wanted me and they have a plan for me, so I really appreciated the talks I had with the manager (Frank Lampard) and director of football (Kevin Thelwell). They told me how they wanted me to play and I enjoyed it.

"They both have a lot of ambition and that's the type of guy I am so it matches.

"The manager was one of the big reasons. He played at the highest level, won many things and was a midfielder, too. It means a lot to have interest from him and I think he can teach me many things."

Insisting he can play different roles in midfield, Onana will wear

Everton's

No 8 shirt next term.

"I think I can play every position in centre midfield, whether that's as a holding midfielder or a box-to-box as a number eight. That said, wherever the manager needs me, I will play there,"

added Onana.

Lille

bought Onana from Hamburg for £5.9m last summer as they made a big profit from the sale of their 20-year-old Belgian star for a reported £33.5 million fee.
