Nayef Aguerd set for spell on sidelines after undergoing ankle surgery

West Ham paid £30 million for Nayef Aguerd a month ago, but he hurt his ankle and had to have surgery, so they can't use him anymore.

Nayef Aguerd

, who just joined West Ham, hurt his ankle in a preseason game and had surgery.

The Hammers reportedly spent £30 million to get Aguerd from Rennes in June, but he might not be ready for the start of the new season because he had to leave last Tuesday's 3-1 loss to Rangers at Ibrox.

West Ham

didn't say when the Morocco defender would be ready to play again. On August 7, West Ham's first game of the season is against Premier League champions

Manchester City

.

Aguerd was brought in because he had helped Rennes keep 19 clean sheets in Ligue 1 over the past two years. Only Wout Faes (20), Marquinhos (26), Sven Botman (28), and Jose Fonte had more (29).

Aaron Creswell

(18) was the West Ham defender with the most clean sheets during the 2020-21 and 2021-22 Premier League seasons.

At the other end of the field,

Gianluca Scamacca

's move from Sassuolo to West Ham could help them.

Giovanni Carnevali

, the CEO of Sassuolo, said over the weekend that a deal was in place. The transfer is thought to be worth £35.5m. It was said that Scamacca, who plays for Italy, would have a medical in London on Monday.
