Ozil joins Basaksehir after Fenerbahce contract terminated

Former Arsenal star has had his contract terminated at Fenerbahce. Ozil has a contract until 2024.

Fenerbahce

Super Lig rival

İstanbul Basaksehir

also on Wednesday announced they have signed the 33-year-old

Mesut Ozil

as a free agent.

Fenerbahce announced Ozil's departure in a statement that read:

"It has been agreed that the contract between our club and Mesut Ozil will be terminated by mutual agreement... We wish Mesut Ozil success for the rest of his career.”

He joined the Turkish club from Arsenal in January 2021. Former Real Madrid player scored 8 goals in just 36 appearances for Fenerbahce.

Earlier in the summer, Ozil dismissed claims that he will soon leave as he insists he will see out his contract and end his career at the club. The Germany international was dropped from the squad and also was suspended by Fenerbahce in March and he later revealed that he went six months without being paid.

Fenerbahce decided to change their manager this summer but Jorge Jesus recently said that Ozil would not be part of the squad for next season. He told reporters:

"He is a well-known player around the world. But I will follow exactly what was the end of the Ozil era."
