£20.5m Wolves transfer makes Collins the most-expensive Irish player

Making 19 Premier League appearances with Burnley last season, the 21-year-old has become the most expensive player in Irish history by completing his switch to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The former Stoke defender who also has 6 senior international caps, has officially joined

Wolverhampton Wanderers

by signing a five-year deal with the option of another 12 months. He will join the club’s pre-season trip to Alicante.

Wolves have reportedly paid a record fee of£20.5 million for the signature of the defender which eclipses the £19m Liverpool paid Tottenham for Robbie Keane in 2008, making Nathan Collins the most-expensive Irish player ever.

Wolves technical director, Scott Sellars told

the Wolves' official website

regarding their new signing: "We're getting someone who is physically very good, very tall, very athletic, and is very comfortable on the ball – he can step in and take the ball forward, which is what we need.

"He's very good in both boxes and has real aerial strength. The feedback on his personality is about his leadership qualities, he's a good character, so he ticks all the boxes."

Collins is supposedly Romain Saiss' successor as the defender left the club on a free transfer to Besiktas. With Conor Coady, Max Kilman, and Willy Boly as Bruno Lage's first-choice centre-backs, Collins has a lot of competition to make to earn a first-team place next season.

Stoke

's youngest captain in history, Collins played 27 times in 2020–21 before he suffered a season-ending foot injury playing against Norwich City on 13 February 2021 and joined Burnley next summer, where he came to prominence.
