PSG player asked to explain absence after homophobia accusations

French Football Federation has criticised Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Idrissa Gueye.

Idrissa Gueye

has been accused of homophobia after he missed his team's last

Ligue 1

match in protest at the division's gesture in support of LGBTQI+ rights.

PSG

coach Mauricio Pochettino said Gueye missed this game for personal reasons. Gueye also missed the corresponding match last season.

For the second consecutive season, professional clubs in France wore shirts with colored numbers using the rainbow flag, the symbol of the LGBTQ

movement.

"This absence (against Montpellier)... is very widely interpreted as a refusal to participate,"

the French Football Federation's (FFF) ethics board said in a statement seen by AFP.

"One of two things, either the hypotheses are unfounded and we invite you to immediately express yourself in order to silence these rumors.

"Or the rumors are true. In this case, we ask you to be aware of the impact of your actions and the very serious error committed.

"In refusing to take part in this collective initiative you are validating discriminatory behavior... and not only against the LGBTQI+ community."

Meanwhile, Senegal President Macky Sall has supported Idrissa Gueye on Twitter.

He tweeted:

"I support Idrissa Gana Gueye. His religious beliefs must be respected."
