Ronaldo prepared to “fight” for Portugal to get to World Cup 2022

The Portugal international is preparing to represent his country on international duty as they want to take part in the Qatar 2022’s play-offs.

Cristiano Ronaldo

has promised to “fight” for his country’s right to win the

2022 World Cup

, with the

Manchester United

legend keen on playing at what may be his last major global showpiece.

The superstar is 37 years old and notwithstanding claiming that he wishes to extend his career to his 40s, he is reaching the end of his playing days.

He has graced four World Cup competitions before, while winning the European Championship in 2016, planning to reach a fifth with Portugal ready to go against Turkey in a play-off semi-final on Thursday.

If they vanquish Turkey, they will lock horns with Italy or North Macedonia in the final on March 29, with Ronaldo eager to get to Qatar.

He posted on Instagram:

“Total focus on the 2022 World Cup.

“Proud, as always, to represent Portugal.

“We know that the path will not be easy, we have the utmost respect for the opponents we will face and who share the same goals as us.

“But together, we will fight to put Portugal in its rightful place. Let's do it!”

Portugal

have a talismanic player at their finger tip as they aim for the World Cup finals as the five-time Ballon d’Or winner is the all-time leading goalscorer in men’s international football, with 115 goals scored to his name and winning more caps, 184, that any other player in Europe.

While Ronaldo could lead by example for his country as they aim for a ticket to Qatar, Fernando Santos has a couple of alternative match-winners at his disposal.

Bruno Fernandes echoes Ronaldo in a pre-match rallying call before lining up for Turkey game.

He has said on social media:

“Now more than ever, we all need to be united.

“We will do everything to reach the World Cup.”

The last time Portugal failed to get to the World Cup was in 1998.
