CAS refused to put Russia’s UEFA ban on hold

After a hearing at the Court of Arbitration for Sport, the ban on Russian teams at club and international level remain put.

Russian football chiefs’ attempts to suspend the ban on their teams playing in UEFA competition have failed.

The Russian Football Union (FUR) took it to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) after seeing its club and national team banned by FIFA and UEFA "until further notice".

The decision made by FIFA and UEFA came after Russia invade Ukraine a few weeks back. Russia "categorically disagreed" with the ban, so an appeal was submitted while also asking for a stay of execution.

CAS, however, did not agree to put the sanctions of UEFA on hold.

"

The challenged decision remains in force and all Russian teams and clubs continue to be suspended from participation in UEFA competitions,"

CAS said in a statement.

At the time of the decision,

Spartak Moscow

were the only representative in the European club competition from Russia, as

RB Leipzig

were eliminated from the Europa quarter finals.

The announcement made on Tuesday are only regarding UEFA and Russia are hopeful FIFA ban can be overturned in order for them to feature in the World Cup.

Russia were scheduled to lock horns with Poland in a qualifying play-off semi-final later this month.

If Russia are out, Poland will go against either Sweden or the Czech Republic as the semi final of March 24 is going to go as planned.

Poland, Sweden and the Czech Republic have shown their unwillingness to play Russia given the events happening in Ukraine.
