Pioli reveals Milan scouted Maignan after facing him in Europa League

The former Lille goalkeeper joined the Rossoneri in the summer transfer window.

AC Milan signed

Mike Maignan

to replace the newly departed Gianluigi Donnarumma in the summer. The former Lille goalkeeper immediately found his place in the Rossoneri squad, keeping clean sheets in three of his seven Serie A appearances for the Italian giants so far.

In a new interview with

Il Giornale

, Stefano Pioli reveals his side have scouted Maignan after facing Lille in the Europa League last season.

“When we play against a European rival, we usually see 4-5 matches with the staff to see who we’ll meet,”

the Rossoneri boss said.

“And in those games, Mike impressed me. I saw the way he was talking to his teammates when they played at San Siro. We followed him and our scouts and confirmed the good impression we had had.”

Maignan started his career at PSG before moving to Lille in 2015. The French goalkeeper featured in 180 games for the Ligue 1 side, keeping clean sheets in 65 matches. The 26-year-old won the Ligue 1 trophy with Les Dogues before moving to San Siro for a new adventure this summer.

After the international break, Milan will face Verona in their next Serie A game on October 16.
