Pirlo shrugs off Kalvin Phillips comparisons
The Juventus legend believes his style of play was “a bit different” from the way the Leeds United star performs.
Kalvin Phillips enjoyed great form in Leeds United’s 2020-21 campaign as they earned a top-ten finish in their first Premier League season after a 16-year absence. The 25-year-old was included in England’s Euro 2020 squad, where he played a key role in the Three Lions’ run to the final.
The young midfielder has been compared to
Andrea Pirlo
for his style of play. However, the former Juventus star says Phillips is a different kind of midfielder.
"It’s true. In England, there’s never been this kind of player. There have been great midfielders over the years with different skills,"
Pirlo told
The Athletic.
"There’s the boy at Leeds (Phillips), who’s a bit of a regista…
"But we’re a bit different. He doesn’t have the same characteristics I had. You’ve always had box-to-box midfielders, like Frank Lampard."
Phillips featured in 31 games for Leeds United last season, scoring one goal and providing three assists. The Leeds star has attracted interest from a host of top European clubs, with Liverpool being mooted as his main suitor.
