Shkodran Mustafi: former Arsenal defender in talks with Genoa

Former Arsenal center-back Shkodran Mustafi has been heavily linked with a return to Serie A as Genoa may be closing in on a free transfer for the former German international.

The 29-year-old has been a free agent since the expiry of his contract with

Schalke 04

in July.

He had been linked with

Fiorentina

, but they decided to sign

Matija Nastasic

from Schalke instead, while he had another offer from the Turkish side

Adana Demirspor

.

According to transfer pundit

Nicolò Schira

, Mustafi is in advanced talks with

Genoa

for a contract until June 2025.

Mustafi made 50 appearances for

Sampdoria

during his two-year spell between 2012 and 2014 before his switch to Valencia, and now he is set for a return to Italian football.

The World Cup winner, who has 20 senior caps for Germany, signed for the Premier League side

Arsenal

in 2016 for a reported fee of €41m.
