Brazil defeat Mexico on penalties to reach Tokyo Olympics final

The Selecao won their semi-final tie against El Tri on penalties after a goalless draw.

in the semi-finals of the Tokyo Olympics on Tuesday. Andre Jardine made one change to the Brazil lineup that defeated Egypt on Saturday.

started the game ahead of Matheus Cunha, who missed the match due to injury. On the other hand, Jesus Angulo replaced the suspended Jorge Sanches on the left-hand side of Mexico’s backline.

Brazil started the first half with dominance and managed to create a few serious chances at the beginning of the game. The Selecao was awarded a penalty in the 28th minute. However, the referee changed his decision upon reviewing by VAR.

After a goalless first half, Brazil intensified their efforts to break the deadlock in the second period. The Selecao’s best chance to score came in the 83rd minute, when

’s strike from the right side of the box hit the far post. The Selecao continued their attacks, but they were not able to convert their chances and the game went to extra-time.

Mexico continued to defend with their well-organized backline throughout the extra time. On the other hand, Brazil seemed frustrated and lacked enough composure to clinch the match-winner. The match was destined to be decided by the penalties.

Mexico missed their first two efforts, while Brazil scored three penalties through Dani Alves, Gabriel Martinelli, and Bruno Guimaraes. Following a converted penalty by Carlos Alberto Rodriguez for Mexico,

Reinier Jesus

scored the fourth penalty for the Selecao to send them to the final. Brazil won the penalty shoot-outs with a 4-1 result after a goalless game at the Kashima Stadium.

The winner of today’s semi-final match between

Japan

and

Spain

will face Brazil in the final on Saturday.
