Depay: ‘I would have joined Barcelona with or without Koeman’

Memphis Depay put pen to paper for a two-year contract with Barcelona. Reuniting with his former Netherland boss, the Blaugrana star has reached an agreement with the club over a 30% wage cut as he joined from Lyon on a free transfer.

However, although the Dutch midfielder expressed his pleasure of working with

Ronald Koeman

again, he insists he would have joined the Catalan giants even if the manager wasn’t in charge.

“I would have come even if he was not there because you don’t say no to Barca”,

Depay

 told

Marca

.

“But it is also true the coach had a great impact on my move.

“I know him well, he placed his faith in me as a forward with the national team.”

Reporting to

Barcelona’s

 preseason camp,

Depay

could feature against either Girona or VfB Stuttgart in the coming days.

Depay said after arriving in Barcelona

: "It is a special day, I am very excited to go to the club and to the stadium. It is all very beautiful and it will be an incredible day.

"I hope to win many titles, which is why I have come to this great club. It is what the club represents, it has a very rich history. I'm looking forward to meeting everyone at the club.

"I just came from vacation and now it's time to refocus. I want to start the season well and be totally focused here. I will try to adapt as quickly as possible."

During a four-and-a-half-year stint at Lyon, the 27-year-old Dutchman made 178 appearances during which he was able to score 76 goals.
