Napoli set to unveil Maradona stadium and statue
The Stadio Diego Armando Maradona will be formally opened and Napoli are set to unveil a new statue of the Argentina legend outside the stadium on July 29.
According to LaPresse and the Corriere dello Sport, the local council in Naples has now finalized the details.
The city council just permitted the ceremony to take place, as the unveiling will also mark the formal occasion where the stadium will be renamed from Stadio San Paolo to Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.
The pitch had already been referred to as "Diego Maradona" after the Argentine star passed away in November 2020, although it was still formally named San Paolo.
The event will now take place on the evening of July 29. A statue of the football icon, which has been donated to the city by artist Mimmo Sepe, will be unveiled on the same night outside the stadium.
Maradona played with Napoli from 1984 to 1991, helping the Partenope to the most successful spell in their history, in which they won their only two Serie A titles, a UEFA Cup, a Coppa Italia, and an Italian SuperCup.
El Pibe de Oro appeared in 257 matches for Napoli, scoring 115 goals in the process.
