Arthur Melo set to miss three months after knee surgery

Juventus have confirmed midfielder Arthur Melo is expected to miss the start of the new season and will be away for about three months following knee surgery.

The 24-year-old suffered a post-traumatic injury of the soft tissue between the tibia and fibula in his right leg in February 2020 during a clash with Atalanta. He had to postpone the operation to bolster the club's top-four chase.

The club had used traditional methods hoping that they would have resolved the issue when he returns for preseason. However, that did not happen and he was forced to undergo surgery.

That operation was completed today by Doctors Piana and Battiston at the Fornaca clinic in Turin.

A statement released by the club confirms

‘the recovery time is circa three months.’

“This afternoon Arthur underwent surgery to remove the ossification of the interosseous membrane of his right leg.

“The operation, performed by Dr. Piana and Dr. Battiston, in the presence of the Juventus health officer Dr. Stefanini at the Fornaca clinic in Turin, was successful.

“The recovery time is approximately 3 months.”

Melo was signed from

Barcelona

in September 2020 for €10m plus bonuses, as part of an exchange deal with

Miralem Pjanic

. Unfortunately for the Brazilian, his first season with Juventus turned out to be a nightmare as he struggled to cement himself in the starting eleven.

That is partly because of the fitness problems that dominated his stay, and he is hoping that this operation will help him change the situation.
