Spain's hero Simon: 'I would have given Sommer the MVP'

Spain’s Unai Simon was undoubtedly the game’s man of the match as the Athletic Bilbao goalkeeper made two saves in the shootout, stopping Fabian Schar and Manuel Akanji before Swiss youngster Ruben Vargas fired his spot-kick over the bar.

Spain

became the first team that booked their place in Euro 2020’s semi-finals by beating

Switzerland

3-1 on penalties after a 120-minute marathon that ended 1-1. Despite beating France in penalties, the 10-man Switzerland had too little to say in the penalty shoot-out they had

against Spain in the competition’s quarter-finals

.

Although

Sommer

saved out Rodri’s penalty,

Spain

kept their nerve to reach the last four by beating the Swiss men 3-1 on penalties,

with their 24-year-old goalkeeper saving three penalties.

“You have to have the mentality that each game is new”,

Unai Simon

told his post-match interview with

Marca

.

“For the semi finals you have to start the same, with your head on the sole thought of winning.

“You have to have that to go on and win this European Championship.

“I would have given Sommer the MVP, he was excellent.”

On the shoot-out, he added: “It's a feeling of euphoria, but also of anger at all the work the team was doing in the 120 minutes.

"We should not have gotten there but we were lucky, the coin fell on our side and we are very happy about it."

"Today is very good," he added, "but we still have to win this European Championship."

Spain

will face

Italy

 on

Tuesday

at Wembley Stadium.

Italy got through the quarter-finals with a 2-1 victory over Belgium.
