Cancelo ruled out of Portugal Euro 2020 squad due to Covid-19

The Portugal international is ruled out of the Euro 2020 as he is struggling with Covid-19 and has to be in self-isolation.

Joao Cancelo

will not feature for Portugal in Euro 2020 due to a positive Covid-19 test and Diogo Dalot will be his replacement.

Fernando Santos

called up Cancelo to be part of the squad for the European Championships after contributing to Manchester City’s Premier League title win as well as the Carabao Cup trophy in the 2020-21 season.

The Portuguese star had a key role in Portugal’s squad for the tournament, but is dealing with coronavirus before their Group F battle against Hungary on Tuesday.

The Portuguese Football Federation announced that Diogo Dalot will be the 27-year-old’s replacement. The Manchester United right-back was on a loan spell at Milan last season.

"Under-21 international Diogo Dalot will join the National Team's delegation in Budapest to prepare for his debut at Euro 2020,"

FPF said in an official statement.

"The AC Milan player will replace Joao Cancelo, who tested positive for Covid-19 following a rapid antigen test carried out this Saturday by the FPF Health and Performance Unit.

"The Hungarian health authorities were immediately informed and the player – who is doing well – was placed in isolation. The result of the test carried out by USP was confirmed by an RT-PCR test carried out on Joao Cancelo also on Saturday and whose result was known on Sunday morning.

"In accordance with the Covid-19 protocol defined by UEFA before the Euro 2020 matches, all players and members of the entourage underwent RT-PCR tests on Saturday. The results, with the exception of Joao Cancelo, were negative.

"The Hungarian health authorities became aware of compliance with the protection procedures, fully respected according to the UEFA protocol, in a group that also has a high rate of vaccine coverage and authorised the National Team to comply with the stipulated plan for the European Championship without any changes."

Cancelo’s potential and experience would have made him a qualified asset for the battle against Hungary and he would have been in the starting line-up.

Dalot is going to be faced with a great weight of expectation after being called up to be part of the squad, with cancelo going in isolation for 10 days.

However, players like Cristiano Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes, Diogo Jota and Joao Felix will have a lot to offer.
