Riise confirms there are 24 English players on the Team GB shortlist

As Great Britain’s final squad for the upcoming Olympics is expected to be announced in May, England's interim head coach confirmed that the 24 players called up for their April fixtures are all on the 35-player Team GB shortlist.

Asked if the 24 players are all on the Team GB shortlist, Hege Riise replied: "That's correct."

Just two hours before Birmingham and Everton’s WSL fixture in March, some players from both sides were informed they had been cut from the Team GB Olympic shortlist. Birmingham’s manager, Carla Ward, slammed FA for their ‘ridiculous’ timing as her 20-year-old goalkeeper, Hannah Hampton, was left in tears after finding out about being left out of the squad.

Riise offered further comment on that incident on Tuesday, saying: "The timing was not my call, but it was not how I want to work. That was a big mistake of us and as soon as we found out I call both the [club] coaches and Hannah, of course, just to apologise for the process of that. That was a mistake that we don't want to happen again."

Alongside two youth goalkeepers, Karen Bardsley and Carly Telford have also been selected in England’s latest squad while the latter has played just three WSL games for Chelsea this year.

"That's why we now bring two experienced goalkeepers alongside that, so when we make the decision, we have all the information that we want to make a clear decision of who will be the best going into the Olympics," she explained.
