Arsenal to sign another goalkeeper this January
Although Emiliano Martinez helped Arsenal win the FA Cup and finish their Premier League campaign strongly, the Gunners decided to favor Bernd Leno and sell the Argentine.
Mikel Arteta
feels a gasp in his side’s goalkeeper options as their summer signing,
Runar Alex Runarsson
, couldn’t provide enough competition for their number one goalie.
The Iceland international is reportedly setting to be loaned-out as he struggled on the rare occasions he has filled in for
Leno
, and the Spanish manager was subject of criticism after he let
Martinez
leave the club for a £17 million fee this summer, despite showing his talent at the club.
With third-choice keeper
Matt
Macey
leaving for
Hibernian
last week and
Runarsson’s
possible departure,
Arteta
revealed his side will be looking to sign a keeper in the January transfer market in a press conference on Monday.
The Spaniard said:
“There is nothing there yet [regarding Runarsson].
"We are assessing what is going to happen with the three positions, the discussions we had in the summer with Edu and the club were a little bit different to what actually happened because of the transfer window and the situation that developed with Emi at the end of the day.
"We didn't have much time to do what we really wanted to do and we decided to assess the situation now in this window, which is what we are trying to do, and we will make a decision about how we want to move forward in those three positions in the goalkeeping area."
