Bale’s substitution was done for fear of injury, says Mourinho

The Welsh forward didn’t return to the game after half-time at his own discretion.

Gareth Bale

returned to

Tottenham

on a loan deal from Real Madrid in the summer and has so far managed to score two goals for Spurs. The last one came in his team’s Carabao Cup match against

Stoke City

on Wednesday as the 31-year-old opened the scoring in the 22nd minute. However, Bale was substituted at half-time and watched the rest of the match from the bench.

Jose Mourinho

has revealed in a post-match interview that Bale’s substitution has been the player’s own decision after he sensed a potential injury.

"It was his decision,"

Mourinho told

Sky Sports

.

"[It was] something he felt. He told me immediately when walking to the dressing room [at half-time].

"I cannot say what, I cannot say the dimension of it. Now it is time for the medical department and I will try to know."

Tottenham's Premier League campaign will continue with their match against Wolves on Sunday before they host Fulham three days later. Their first 2021 match will be played against

Leeds

on January 2.
