Cristante gets banned for 'taking God’s name in vain'

The 25-year-old midfielder was sanctioned for swearing after he conceded an own goal during Roma’s Sunday’s 5-1 Serie A win over Bologna.

Bryan Cristante

was punished strictly by Italy’s FA with a one-match ban because of blasphemy. Serie A revealed their decision on a statement without specifying

the nature of the offending remark. Cristante will miss

Roma’s

match against

Torino

on Thursday.

“(Cristante) pronounced a blasphemous expression in the 23rd minute of the first half.

“The player in question was clearly framed by the television footage while uttering a blasphemous expression that is identifiable and audible without margin of reasonable doubt.”

Since 2010, the Italian FA have taken disciplinary action against several players and coaches who disrespected God or the sacred. players who also show t-shirts with personal messages to their family, or which refer to their religious beliefs will also be punished according to the rules.

Former Italy’s captain,

Gianluigi Buffon

, and Udinese’s

Rolando Mandragora

were punished for blasphemy in the past.
