Serie A Top Scorers in 2021

Serie A is considered unsympathetic to strikers because of their emphasis on defensive attributes. The number of the forwards who somehow managed to shine in Serie A are rare and valuable as well. Let's take a look at Italian Serie A top goal scorers in 2021.

In 2021, the Italian football had some special events. The Italian national team won Euro 2020 that was held in 2021. The other special event was the championship of a team other than Juventus. Juventus was dominating the Serie with 9 titles in a row but Inter Milan finished their reign in 2020-21. Serie A benefited from the superstars like

Cristiano Ronaldo

and

Romelu Lukaku

but unfortunately, the two strikers left Italy for the Premier League clubs.

It is a common belief that Calcio is a hostile environment for attacking football and especially for the strikers. The fact is Serie A is no longer an all out defense and you could observe the development of Italian football in the playing style of

Roberto Mancini

's Azzurri. Victor Osimhen and Mattia Destro are two players that given their current form they could enter the list of

Italian Serie A Top Scorers

. The stats are all before 2021 November and the article will be updated soon.

Read on to find out more about Serie A top scorers in 2021:

Ronaldo won the 2020-21 Serie A top scorer award, but let’s see who has scored more goals in 2021.

Joao Pedro

The Brazilian striker has been at the peak of his career lately.

Joao Pedro

scored 16 goals for Cagliari in the 2020-21 Serie A season. It's an extraordinary stat for the striker for a team so close to relegation. His great form started in the earlier season 2019-20 where he scored 18 goals. His outstanding skills are no longer unnoticed by anyone. Pedro became Cagliari's captain during the 2020-21 season.

Before 2021 January, Pedro already had a good run scoring 8 goals in the first 14 matches of the league. In the last match of 2020, he scored a brace against

Roma

and in the following match scored the single goal in the 1-4 defeat against Napoli. For the rest of the season, Pedro scored 7 goals in separate appearances including his vital goals against Udinese and Roma. At the end of the 2020-21 season, he scored 16 goals and half of them were in the year 2021.

In the first game of 2021-22, Spezia took the lead with two goals but a brace by Pedro saved the day. Despite Pedro's 4 goals and two assists in the first 4 matches, Cagliari failed to win until the 8th match day. Cagliari collected their first win over Sampdoria under new manager

Walter Mazzarri

. Pedro put Cagliari in the lead in the 4th minute of the game and sealed the win with his second in 94'.

Domenico Berardi

Berardi

is one of the most underrated players of his generation. He is

Sassuolo

's all time goal scorer by far with 109 goals. Berardi scored 90 goals in 246 Serie A appearances all with Sassuolo. The year 2021 didn't start very well for the Italian winger. He missed most of January due to a muscular injury and didn't score any goals in the year's first month. Berardi scored the opening goal of the first match he started after injury in only fifteen minutes.

In March he had two wonderful days. The first one was in a home match facing

Napoli

. Berardi scored a goal and delivered an assist but the exciting match ended in a tie. At the last match of March, Berardi put Sassuolo in the lead by two goals he netted facing Torino but the host team performed a comeback in the last 15 minutes. The 27 years old missed the first three fixtures of April but he had a glorious return in the second half of the month. He was a halftime substitute in the match against Fiorentina. Sassuolo conceded a goal in the first half but Berardi scored the equalizer shortly after he was sent on the field.

Berardi scored another one on 62' and the match ended 3-1. Berardi delivered a late assist in the 2-1 victory over Milan and the single goal of the win against

Sampdoria

. In the last five fixtures of 2020-21, Berardi scored three goals and registered two assists. Berardi kept his great form during the summer and won the Euro 2020 with Azzurri. The 2021-22 season has been difficult for Sassuolo because of De Zerbi's departure but Berardi seems resilient. He has scored four goals in 2021-22, which makes the total number of his goals in the calendar year rise to 14.

Luis Muriel

As one of the

Italian Serie A top scorers

,

Luis Muriel

is a familiar face for Calcio fans. He has played in Serie A for 4 different teams. He made a perfect pair for his fellow

Duvan Zapata

at Atalanta. Muriel scored 41 goals in 75 Serie A appearances wearing Nerazzurri. The 30 years old Colombian started 2021 by scoring three goals in the first three games of the year. Muriel was a substitute player in two of them and he was changed in half time for the other one.

Given that he rarely starts for

Atalanta

and never plays full time his goals may be worth more. In February, Muriel was relentless. He registered 3 goals and 3 assists in 4 games. In the 4-2 victory over Napoli, he scored a goal and delivered an assist. Muriel did the same in a 5-1 victory against Crotone and 5-0 against Bologna. Muriel scored two braces in the last two months of the 2020-21 season. The first was in the 3-2 win against Udinese where he played as left winger.

Muriel scored both goals before his injury that led to changing him with Ilicic in the halftime. The last brace by Muriel was during the 5-2 win over Parma that he also delivered an assist. Luis Muriel opened Torino's goal in the opening week of 2021-22 in the 6th minute of the game. With one goal in the current season and 15 goals in the previous one, Muriel's goals in 2021 sum up to 16.

Lautaro Martinez

The day Inter discovered the talent of

Lautaro Martinez

, they felt confident getting rid of the famous

Mauro Icardi

. Together with Lukaku, Martinez formed a terrifying attacking duo. As one of the Italian Serie A top goal scorers in 2021, Lautaro had a great start and Inter won Crotone  6-2 thanks to Lautaro's first hat trick in Serie A. Inter took a huge step in the Scudetto race by winning 11 matches in a row.

The win streak started with a 4-0 home victory over

Benevento

where Martinez scored a goal and delivered an assist. He did the same in a 3-1 win against Lazio and a 2-1 win facing Torino. In one of the most important Della Madonnina derbies in recent years, Lautaro scored the opening goal after only 5 minutes had passed. He doubled Inter's lead on 57' and the match ended 3-0 against the main rival for the league's title.

Martinez scored two separate goals in the final weeks of the 2020-21 season. Inter won both matches with the same 5-1 results. The first victim was Sampdoria right after Inter secured the Scudetto. Inter won the first match as the champion of Serie A. On the final matchday of 2020-21, Inter had another 5-1 result facing Udinese. Lautaro registered an assist and a goal before his substitution on 57'. Martinez skipped the first match of 2021-22 but scored 5 goals in Inter's next 6 matches.

Simy

Simy

is the surprise guest of Serie A top scorers in 2021. The Nigerian currently plays for the recently promoted

Salernitana

but he's on this list mostly because of what he did last season at Crotone. The 29 years old striker joined Crotone in July 2016 while they were competing in Serie A. After two seasons they were relegated to Serie B. The second season in Serie B resulted in Serie A’s promotion. Simy scored 20 goals in 2019-20 Serie B and was the league's top goalscorer. The 2020-21 campaign was the top performance by Simy.

Despite the poor results of

Crotone

and relegation while having the worst goal difference in Serie A, Simy scored 20 goals. He was in the 5th place of the top goalscorers standings in a tie with Ciro Immobile. Crotone lost all the first ten Serie A matches in 2021 but one. The one match ended up with a 4-1 victory against Benevento where Simy scored a brace and delivered an assist. He scored Crotone's only goal in the next match against Fiorentina.

In 2021 March and April, Simy was on fire. He scored in all four matches of March for Crotone. He started with a goal in the loss against Atalanta but Crotone defeated Torino 4-2 thanks to a brace by Simy. He scored another brace against Lazio and a single goal against Bologna but Crotone lost both matches with the same 3-2 results. In the next match facing Napoli, two goals from Simy was not enough to prevent the 4-3 loss. His single goal against

Udinese

extended his scoring streak to 7 matches in which he scored 10 goals. In the current season, Simy remained in Serie A by joining Salernitana.

Duvan Zapata

When Romelu Lukaku left Inter, Duvan Zapata was constantly being connected with Inter to replace him. The Colombian striker has played and scored in Serie A for Napoli, Udinese, Sampdoria, and lately Atalanta. The 30 years old stayed at Atalanta where he has been the main striker of the phenomenal team of Gasperini. Zapata had a sensational 2021 start. In a rank battle versus Sassuolo, he netted 2 goals and delivered an assist. Zapata scored in victories against Milan, and Napoli where he also made an assist.

In another battle facing

Fiorentina

, Ruslan Malinovskyi delivered two assists for Zapata in the first half. After defeating Fiorentina his form declined and he scored two goals until the end of 2020-21. Zapata made it up and currently is one of the best strikers of Serie A. In the first 10 Serie A games of 2021-22, Zapata netted 5 goals and made 3 assists. His goal and assist in the last five minutes of the match against

Milan

weren’t enough to escape from losing vital points.

At Luigi Ferraris, Zapata started his attempt for the comeback earlier and this time Atalanta won 3-1. He has scored a total of 71 goals in 141 matches for Atalanta and if he scored 42 more goals it makes him the all time top scorer of the club.

Cristiano Ronaldo

As one of the

Italian Serie A top goal scorers in 2021

, Ronaldo had a productive year in Serie A, despite his controversial move back to Manchester. He scored 17 goals in his 22 appearances in Serie A for

Juventus

. In four matches he scored more than once and in 10 of all 12 sittings in which he scored at least once, Juventus won the three points of the match. Being a right footed winger or center forward, Ronaldo scored four times with his left foot in 2021.

As the winner of the Capocannoniere award in 2021, he scored two penalties in Serie A. Known for his high jumps like a basketball player, Ronaldo had five headers. Despite having the winner of the

Paolo Rossi

award in its squad Juventus couldn’t win the Serie A title in the 2020-21 season, and after nine years of being Italy’s champion,

Inter Milan

stole the title. Juventus wasn’t even in second place, and they had a hard season ending in fourth place after Milan clubs and Atalanta.

His transfer to Manchester hasn’t been like his first spell and with so many big and famous names in Manchester United’s squad, their formation seems like chaos. However, he already scored three times in six appearances for the Red Devils.

Lorenzo Insigne

Napoli seems to be on the verge of a rise in Serie A. In the current season, they won nine out of ten matches and had only a goalless draw against AS Roma. out of 22 goals in the 2021-22 season, the captain of Napoli scored four goals.

Besides being one of the Italian Serie A top scorers in 2021,

Lorenzo Insigne

has second place in key passes both in this season and the previous one. Also, he had third place in the number of key passes outside the box with 43 after Lazio’s

Luis Alberto

and Sampdoria’s

Candreva

. But this season he has the most with 16. The 30 year old winger is known for his creativity, quick feet, and technical ability, which makes him extremely agile in possession, and gives him excellent balance and control of the ball.

Along with his intelligence and dribbling skills he can create space for his teammates in attacking areas. In 2021, he scored 18 goals for Napoli, mostly with his right foot, and created 8 assists. All of his career, he has been a Napoli striker, but in the last summer transfer window there have been rumors of him moving to Inter Milan. He was on Napoli’s starting squad in almost all of the 2021 matches. We have to wait and see if he will be the club’s captain for another year.

Ciro Immobile

As Lazio’s highest all time leading goal scorer with 150 goals since 2016,

Ciro Immobile

proved himself to be one of the

Serie A top scorers in 2021

. In 32 appearances in 2021 for

Lazio

, he scored 19 goals, including a hat trick against Spezia which saw them winning 6-1. He works very well with Sergej Milinkovic-Savic and four of these 19 goals were because of Milinkovic-Savic’s assists.

He has the highest Expected Goals (xG) in this season in Serie A with 6.83 and was the second after Ronaldo (30.87) with 23.45. Before Inter Milan’s

Edin Dzeko

with seven goals, he scored eight times only in this season in only eight matches in Serie A. Immobile has also the highest value of shots on target in this season and was second in the previous season after Ronaldo. Five out of nineteen goals in 2021 scored by Ciro Immobile were penalties.

As one of the Italian Serie A top scorers, he has the record for creating big chances in Serie A matches in this season with 16. With Lazio’s recent change of head coach and the problems they’re having, it doesn’t seem Immobile would win his first Serie A title in this season. But,

Sarri

could help them qualify for the Champions League next season.

Dusan Vlahovic

Fiorentina’s creative center forward,

Dusan Vlahovic

, scored more goals than anyone in Serie A in 2021. As one of the Italian Serie A top scorers, he didn’t miss a single Serie A match in 2021, and in 34 appearances he scored 22 goals for

Fiorentina

. Seven out of 22 goals were penalties and he placed three of them in the back of the net in this season. As a left footed forward, he scored eight goals with the Left foot and just one with the right foot.

In the previous season, he had at least 15 goals in Serie A, more than any other Fiorentina player. In the 2020-21 season, he had third place in goals scored after Ronaldo and Luis Muriel. Also in expected goals, he was third with 20.52 after Ronaldo and Ciro Immobile. In shots on target in the Serie A previous season, he was fourth with 42 after Ronaldo, Immobile, and Insigne.

He has turned out to be one of the best strikers in Serie A which many clubs from all Europe wanted him in their squad in the 2021 summer transfer window. The 21 year-old Serbian goal scoring abilities from even long distances and direct free kicks, always scare his opponents in Serie A.
