Best Goalkeepers in the Premier League 2019-20 Season

Who are the best goalkeepers in the Premier League 2019-20 season? For sure, the ones with more clean sheets, more saves, and more clearances. In this post we are going to let you know about the top 10 Premier League goalkeepers in 2019-20 season. Stay with us to know who they might be!

We have already talked about

top 10 Premier League goalscorers of 2019-20 season

. Now it’s the other side of the story’s turn: Goalkeepers who actually stop and should stop the scorers from scoring.

As you might have guessed names like David de Gea and Ederson should be among the premier league best goalkeepers in 2019-20 season as they really are. But which other goalkeepers populate the list of

top 10 Premier League goalkeepers

this season?

Several Criteria to Determine the Best Goalkeepers in the Premier League 2019-20 Season

Clean sheets is just one criterion although also the most important one. Other criteria include the number of saves, clearances, high claims, punches, and finally the penalties saved.

We have taken the four top Premier League goalkeepers in this season from the goalkeepers in the major English league who have had the most number of clean sheets. From position 5 down to the end of the list other criteria mentioned above will take effect to determine the best goalkeepers in the EPL 2019-20 season.

Ederson (Manchester City)

The

best goalkeeper in the Premier League

2019-20 season in terms of the number of clean sheets earned, Ederson is the 26-year-old Brazilian goalkeeper of Manchester City who tops the list of best Premier League goalkeepers in 2019-20 season with a total of 16 clean sheets earned.

Ederson

has been playing for Manchester City since 2017 and has earned 52 clean sheets in his 109 league appearances for them which translates to almost one clean sheet in every two appearances he has made for the Premier League club since joining them.

Ederson has conceded a total number of 28 goals this season that when divided by the number of his league appearances for Man City (109) gets him a goals-conceded-to-appearance ratio of 0.25. That means Ederson has conceded a goal in every 4 league appearances he has made for the Premier League club on average.

Ederson is also the winner of Premier League Golden Glove this season which is an award given to the goalkeeper in a Premier League season who has kept the most number of clean sheets in that season. Ederson was also named in the UEFA Champions League Breakthrough 11 in the same season he joined Manchester City (2017).

Nick Pope (Burnley)

Ranking second on the list of top 10 Premier League goalkeepers in 2019-20 season, Nick Pope is the 28-year-old English goalkeeper of Burnley who keeps the most number of clean sheets this season (15) after the Brazilian Ederson.

Pope has joined Burnley since 2016 and in his 73 league appearances for the Premier League club he has kept 24 clean sheets in total which translates to one clean sheet in every three appearances.

Pope

has also made the most number of high claims this season with 52 claims in total and a wide margin with the second position on the list of most number of high claims made by

Premier League best goalkeepers

occupied by Ben Foster of Watford with 30 high claims.

And with 122 saves he has made this season, Pope ranks fourth on the list of most saves made this season by Premier League best goalkeepers.

On the list of clearances made this season by Premier League best goalkeepers, Nick Pope ranks sixth jointly with

Bernd Leno

of Arsenal with a total of 26 clearances.

So with all these records, we can say Nick Pope is among the top 6 goalkeepers in the Premier League 2019-20 season when it comes to the number of clean sheets kept, and saves and clearances made.

David de Gea (Manchester United)

The 29-year-old Spanish goalkeeper of Manchester United, David de Gea, is the third

best goalkeeper in EPL

in 2019-20 season in regard to the number of clean sheets kept.

He has actually earned 13 clean sheets this season which puts him on the third position jointly with Rui Patricio of Wolverhampton Wonderers who has also earned 13 clean sheets this season.

De Gea

has been serving Manchester United since 2011 and in the 313 appearances he has made for the Premier League giants he has managed to keep 113 clean sheets.

That means de Gea has kept a clean sheet in every 2.76 appearances he has made for Manchester United. If we just omit those 13s - we mean those 13s in 113 and 313, de Gea has kept a clean sheet exactly in every 3 appearances he has made for the Premier League club.

And although de Gea is just behind

Nick Pope

by one position on the list of most clean sheets kept by best Premier League goalkeepers, he’s behind Pope by a wider margin on the list of most saves and high claims made in this season of the Premier League.

The Spaniard ranks 13th jointly with Alisson of Liverpool on the list of high claims with 10 claims and 9th on the list of most saves jointly with Kasper Schmeichel of Leicester City with 96 saves made. It is as Pope ranks 4th on the list of saves and 1st on the list of high claims made in this season of the Premier League.

Alisson (Liverpool)

Like David de Gea, Alisson has also managed to keep 13 clean sheets in this season of the Premier League along with Rui Patricio of Wolverhampton Wonderers and Kasper Schmeichel of Leicester City.

So why have we preferred Alisson to these goalkeepers? Because Alisson has earned a number of honors and titles the above-mentioned goalkeepers haven’t.

Alisson

was named the Best FIFA Goalkeeper in 2019, Serie A Goalkeeper of the Year in 2017-18 season, and UEFA Champions League Goalkeeper of the Season in 2018-19 season.

He has also won Premier League Golden Glove in 2018-19 season, and Globe Soccer Awards Best Goalkeeper of the Year in 2018 and 2019. And these are only a few of the awards the 27-year-old Brazilian goalkeeper has won so far.

In truth, the only goalkeeper who can compete with Alisson in terms of the number of titles and honors earned, is David de Gea. If we were to sort the best goalkeepers in the Premier League based on the number of titles won, Alisson and De Gea would surely rank first and second on the list, but since our list of best goalkeepers in the Premier League is based on the number of clean sheets kept, these two rank third and fourth on the list.

Rui Patricio (Wolverhampton Wonderers)

The 32-year-old Portuguese goalkeeper of Wolverhamtpon Wonderers,

Rui Patricio

is the third goalkeeper jointly with David de Gea of Manchester United and Alisson of Liverpool with the most number of clean sheets (13) in this season of Premier League.

Patricio has been serving Wolverhamtpon Wonderers since 2018 and has kept 20 clean sheets in total in his 75 appearances for the Premier League club.

That means Patricio has earned one clean sheet in almost every four appearances he has made for Wolverhamtpon Wonderers, however, since he has earned twice as much cleans sheets this season than the previous season, we can say he’s made progress this season, though not in every aspect.

Although Patricio is a tall keeper, he has finished 8th jointly with

Kepa Arrizabalaga

of Chelsea, Aaron Ramsdale of AFC Bournemouth, and Mat Ryan of Brighton and Hove Albion on the list of most high claims made by Premier League goalkeepers this season with 20 high claims made this season.

Concerning the number of saves made this season by the

best goalkeepers in the Premier League

, Rui Patricio comes in 11th place with 91 saves made in total, and although he’s not among the top 5 goalkeepers in the Premier League concerning the number of saves and high claims made, he ranks first jointly with Tim Krul of Norwich City and Kasper Schmeichel of Leicester City on the list of most penalties saved this season by the Premier League goalkeepers with 2 penalties saved overall.

Dean Henderson (on loan to Sheffield United from Manchester United)

Another goalkeeper from among the best goalkeepers in the Premier League with 13 clean sheets this season, Dean Henderson also ranks among the top 10 Premier League goalkeepers with most saves made this season - he actually ranks 8th on the list with 97 saves made.

Henderson

also ranks 8th on the list of Premier League goalkeepers with the most number of high claims made this season jointly with Aaron Ramsdale of AFC Bournemouth, Mat Ryan of Brighton and Hove Albion and Rui Patricio of Wolverhampton Wonderers with an overall of 20 high claims made.

Kasper Schmeichel (Leicester City)

The fifth goalkeeper after Alisson of Liverpool, Rui Patricio of Wolverhamtpon Wonderers and David de Gea and Dean Henderson of Manchester United to have earned 13 clean sheets this season finishing third on the list of most clean sheets earned this season by the

best goalkeepers in the Premier League

.

Kasper Schmeichel is actually the son of the former Danish legend, Peter Schmeichel, who has been serving Leicester City since 2011.

Schmeichel has earned 60 clean sheets in the 339 league appearances he has made for Leicester City which translates to almost 2 cleans sheets in every 11 appearances.

The only season Schmeichel earned more clean sheets than 2019-20 was in 2015-16 season where he earned 15 clean sheets. Other than that, he has always earned less clean sheets than 13, namely 10 in 2018-19 season, 8 in 2018-17 and 2017-16 seasons, and 6 in 2014-15 season.

Concerning the number of high claims made this season by the Premier League goalkeepers,

Schmeichel

is no better than Rui Patricio with 14 high claims made this season overall.

And in regard to the number of saves made, he’s just in front of Patricio by 5 more saves - he has made 96 saves this season while Patricio has made only 91. However, the two goalkeepers rank first jointly on the list of most penalty saves by Premier League goalkeepers this season with 2 penalties saved overall.

Martin Dubravka (Newcastle United)

Ranking fourth on the list of most clean sheets earned by the best goalkeepers in the EPL this season,

Martin Dubravka

is the 31-year-old Slovakian goalkeeper of Newcastle United who has managed to keep 11 clean sheets this season - only two clean sheets less than the third position on the list of Premier League best goalkeepers this season.

Martin Dubravka has been serving Newcastle United since 2018 and has earned 22 clean sheets in his 79 appearances for the Premier League club which translates to almost 2 cleans sheets in every 7 appearances he has made for them so far - not an excellent record but it’s at least better than that of Kasper Schmeichel who has earned only 2 clean sheets in every 11 appearances.

And the interesting thing about Dubravka is that he has actually earned the same number of clean sheets this season as in the previous season (11).

Although not among the top 3 Premier League goalkeepers with the most number of clean sheets earned this season,

Dubravka

ranks first on the list of most saves made this season by the Premier League goalkeepers.

The Slovakian goalkeeper has made 140 saves this season which puts him on the first position on the list with a margin of 12 goals from the second position on the list occupied by Tim Krul of Norwich City.

And concerning the number of high claims made, Dubravka has made more high claims - actually 21 claims - than all the other goalkeepers already mentioned in this post except for Nick Pope who tops the list with 52 claims made this season.

Vicente Guaita (Crystal Palace)

Only one clean sheet behind Martin Dubravka of Newcastle United, Vicente Guaita has actually earned 10 clean sheets this season which gets him on the fifth position on the list of most clean sheets earned by the

best goalkeepers in the Premier League

.

Guaita has been serving Crystal Palace since 2018 and during this time has earned 17 clean sheets in 55 appearances he has made for the Premier League club.

That translates to almost one clean sheet in every three appearances he has made for Crystal Palace - better than both Martin Dubravka of Newcastle United and Kasper Schmeichel of Leicester City.

Concerning the number of saves and high claims made this season,

Guaita

ranks in the middle of the list with 110 saves and 23 high claims made this season. He actually ranks 7th on the list of most saves and 6th on the list of most high claims made by the best goalkeepers in the Premier League.

The only list Guaita ranks first on is the list of most punches made by the Premier League goalkeepers this season. The 33-year-old Spanish goalkeeper has made 22 punches this season which gets him on the first position with a margin of 2 from the second position occupied by Tim Krul of Norwich City - Martin Dubravka of

Newcastle United

ranks third on the same list with 18 punches.

However, although Guaita has earned 10 clean sheets this season, he has conceded 42 goals in his 35 appearances and even has scored an own goal! - in a match against Sheffield United on February 1st, 2020.

Ben Foster (Watford)

Among the

top Premier League goalkeepers

in 2019-20 season,

Ben Foster

is the 37-year-old English goalkeeper of Watford who have ended the season with 9 clean sheets earned in total.

So he ranks sixth on the list of most clean sheets earned by Premier League goalkeepers this season, indeed, jointly with Jordan Pickford of Everton and Mat Ryan of Brighton and Hove Albion. Foster also ranks among the top 10 on the lists of most saves and most high claims made this season by Premier League goalkeepers.

On the list of most saves made by top Premier League goalkeepers in 2019-20 season, Foster ranks fourth jointly with

Mat Ryan

of Brighton and Hove Albion with 117 saves made in total, while on the list of most high claims made by EPL goalkeepers, he ranks better - actually second - with 30 high claims made this season.

Foster is also among the Premier League goalkeepers with the most number of punches this season: He has actually made 13 punches this season that puts him on the 8th position on the list of most punches made.

And if you know that Foster is among the Premier League goalkeepers taller than 190 cm - he’s actually 193 cm tall, it will be quite clear for you why he has finished second on the list of most high claims made this season.

In fact, it is not only height that plays a part in this. Some goalkeepers, even with a height of more than 190 cm, like Alisson of Liverpool, have finished at the bottom of the list. However, whatever it takes, Ben Foster has had it this season plus, indeed, a height of more than 190 cm which plays an important part in this.

Tim Krul (Norwich City)

And finally the last but not least on the list of best goalkeepers in the Premier League,

Tim Krul

may not be from a team that have always competed in the Premier League, but he has had a great performance this season that has gotten him among the top 3 goalkeepers on the lists of most saves, most high claims, and most punches made by Premier League goalkeepers this season.

Tim Krul ranks second on the list of most saves by Premier League goalkeepers with 132 saves, third on the list of most high claims made by Premier League goalkeepers with 29 high claims - only one less than Ben Foster who occupies the second position on the list, and second on the list of most punches made by EPL goalkeepers this season with 20 punches made; this time only 2 punches less than the first position occupied by Vicente Guaita of Crystal Palace.

And on the list of most clean sheets kept by the best goalkeepers in the EPL this season, Tim Krul ranks 10th jointly with

Lukasz Fabianski

of West Ham United and

Aaron Ramsdale

of AFC Bournemouth with 5 clean sheets overall.
