Most Goals Scored in a Single Football Match

Here is a look at the list of football matches that broke records for the most goals in a soccer game ever.

Even though brave defensive efforts and dominating possession are all admirable, they mean little if goals can't be scored. While we all like watching the magnificent and spectacular game performed, it is the goals that count. Scoring goals will result in winning matches.

Although Pele, a legendary player from Brazil, is regarded as one of the best players in history, he is primarily remembered for his prodigious goal-scoring prowess.

Or if you consider the 2015/16 Premier League season champion,

Leicester City

, the defensive line of Claudio Ranieri's men did excellently but they still conceded goals on a regular basis.

Their play was plain and uncomplicated, and they were always the less possessed team, especially against stronger teams. They learned, though, how to net goals. The best goalscorers won the Premier League title ahead of high quality at

Tottenham

,

Arsenal

, and

Manchester City

.

The most fondly remembered games are those that have the highest number of goals in a football match. In the 2011 Derby Manchester, for instance, Manchester City's 6-1 defeat of Manchester United.

Or the 5-1 Arsenal smash in the 2016/17 Champions League against Bayern Munich. or the latest 8-2 annihilation of Barcelona against

Bayern Munich

in the 2019/20 UEFA Champions League.

Most goals scored in a single football match

Here is a look at the list of the soccer games which broke records for the most goals in a soccer game ever. If you think what we mentioned above could be the oddest record for most goals in a soccer game, be ready to get shocked!

Arbroath vs Bon Accord: Sep 12, 1885

Teams that end with high scores became more popular in the early days of soccer, considering that the game was yet to be regulated and strongly-organized sides still faced amateur teams.

It was especially the case in modern cup tournaments, much of which allowed teams without background to compete, sometimes contributing to low levels of opponents.

This was the situation in the 13th annual competition of the Scottish Cup in 1885/86.

The draw saw the newly formed Bon Accord club struggle against experienced club Arbroath, who had played 7 times already during the first round of the tournament.

Once Bon Accord landed in Arbroath, the difference in quality was obvious without a squad jersey.

Arbroath was obviously liable to a quick win, but none predicted the distance. Arbroath has ran a riot and scored 15 goals in 15-0 before the half-time.

Throughout the second half, although other teams turn out to be slower, the Scottish side knew they are registering one of the records of the highest number of goals scored in a soccer match and retained their powerful dominance, scored 21 times more to finish the match with a 36-0 victory.

It was the greatest success and the

most goals in a soccer game

throughout soccer history at that time. And also the simplest game in his career for Arbroath goalie Jim Milne Sr, because he did not record even a single touch of the ball.

AS Adema vs Stade Olympique de l'Emyrne: October 31, 2002

The incredibly huge victory of Arbroath would hold the record for the

most goals scored in a match

for 117 years until Antananarivo 's opponents AS Adema and SO l'Emyrne ultimately broke the record in 2002.

Both teams played the THB Champions League on Madagascan top flight and they smashed the record altogether! The THB Champions League was won in 2001 by SO Emyrne. But 2002 should have been the year of AS Adema.

Indeed, when the game came to be played, AS Adema had successfully completed the title-winning before they were granted a game in a title race after an event for SO Emyrne in their preliminary match.

In this match, the club saw a late penalty, which the referee undoubtedly labeled for. Of course, the club were not so delighted with the decision, due to its ramifications, and decided to protest against Champions AS Adema in their final match.

From the start, the SO Emyrne players started and passed the ball to their own net instantly. Unstoppably, the game smashed a record for most goals in a soccer game by 149-0 on the home side when the referee blew the final whistle.

SO Emyrne manager and 4 footballers including the skipper of the Madagascan National team were convicted each with three-year restrictions. But, although they were punished, the match won a place in the Guinness Book of Records.

Australia vs American Samoa: April 11, 2001

Whereas some way off from the 149 goal win of AS Adema, this match has provoked many discussions on the gulf in quality between many teams of international tournaments that are discussed until today.

Although you expect that

Germany

or

Brazil

, who have dominated international football over the years, will have the record of

most goals in a soccer game

in international tournaments, Australia as a side who are regarded minnows when assessed along with the greatest teams of the world, actually holds the record.

Yet another thing is obvious, no matter how Germany plays, Australia proved to be well over American Samoa, since the Oceanian 2002 World Cup qualifiers demonstrated that they had achieved victory 31-0 against the tiny country.

Samoa had still yet to win a game as a FIFA-recognized side and ranked among the world's terrible teams, while

Australia

entered the match with a 22-0 win over Tonga just two days ago to beat its record for the most goals in a football match scored at international level.

In the wake of breaking their own record, that massive triumphant meant that the sport's history books reinforced their position with Australia having scored 53 goals in just three days and 180 minutes. With four wins and a goal differential of +66, they were predictably top of their qualifying group.

Plateau United Founders vs Akurba FC: July 7, 2013

If you assumed SO Emyrne was bad about throwing their AS Adema game, you'll find yourself absolutely furious in the 2013 Nigerian Division.

Four teams were ultimately banned from participating for 10 years in the obvious match-fixing phase, although the activity was outlawed for life by all participants and officials participating in the two corrupt games.

The games were Plateau United Founders vs Akurba FC and the Police Machine FC vs Bubayaro, which had decided which teams in the Nigerian professional football league system would promote to the lowest level.

Police Machine and Plateau United were on the same points and the gap in the target of the case was singular as both sides expected to secure wins. Halfway in, the United Plateau was 7-0, although the Police Machine contributed to six goals.

Everything soon fell out, as two teams' rivals started to throw their ball into their own net after the break, the matches finished respectively 79-0 and 67-0 and secured promotion of Plateau United. It is not surprising that something was not quite right in the Nigerian Football and their federation took legal action.

The individual responsible or how the match situation was coordinated was never known precisely, however, the Federation worked immediately to penalize the four clubs concerned.

Following two results in Amateur League football, Nigeria Football Federation was angry enough as they set the record of 146 goals in the Guinness Book of the World Records. Plateau United Feeders won 79-0 over Akurba FC while Babayaro FC 67-0 was destroyed by Police Machine FC.

All teams participated in promotional playoffs in the

Nigeria

Nationwide League 3. The games took place concurrently with the promotion of the plateau and Police Machine.

Evidently, the two winners monitored their results and continued to record goals. Alarmed by the scandal, the Nigerian Football Federation reacted quickly by suspending the four clubs indefinitely and by rejecting the result.

"It's inadmissible. This is an enormous scandal. The four teams are immediately and indefinitely suspended until further penalties are imposed. We must deeply analyze the matter and come to the edge, "said Chef Mike Umeh, first NFF Vice President.

"The most goals in a soccer game scored by a club in a single match is still the greatest loss by either side, with Arbroath and Bon Accord being met in 1885, with a score of 36-0.  The number of goals would certainly have registered the sides in the history books if they had been allowed by the NFF" stated by Onochie Anibeze who was distressed frequently questioned if goals were netted by hands or legs.

He added that manipulating games is a criminal offense, and requires an investigation and conviction of the participants. The director of competitions, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, was also astonished by the massive scorelines and guaranteed that all individuals and institutions charged with the investigation will be sanctioned by the Committee.

"All the officers of the match have been suspended. The clubs, their footballers and authorities, and anyone else who has played a part in this disgusting affair is being dealt with seriously, "said Sanusi furiously.

Austria vs Switzerland: June 26, 1954

Although Australia keeps the record of the

most goals in a soccer game

scored in an international match,

Austria

and Switzerland have the most goals scored in a football match in the World Cup finals in a single game.

The remarkable achievement took place in the 1954 tournament with the host country of Switzerland hoping for the first time in their existence to reach the semi-final stage.

They only appeared to be doing it early as they scored in the 16th, 17th, and 19th minutes to take a three-goal advantage.

But Austria was not inclined to stop anytime soon. Attacks in the 25th, 26th, and 27th minutes made it 3-3 ahead of scoring two times more to make it 5-3.Switzerland scored twice more yet Austria finally won the game 7-5.

Since then, many international teams have made 10 and 11 goal matches, but this match has been the only World Cup game to have 12 goals as one of the records for the

highest number of goals scored in a football match

. It has been a record-breaking competition throughout the 1954 World Cup.

In addition to Austria vs. Switzerland match, it provided a couple of other massive victories, such as the 8-3 win of Hungary over West Germany and a 7-2 win of West Germany against Turkey, helping to record the tournament with the highest average goals per game.

Portsmouth vs Reading: 29th September 2007

The

Premier League

age is indeed very youthful in the standard basis and there have not been a ton of records as ridiculous as those mentioned above.

Throughout the past, Premier League's results have been wild. However, these days British football enthusiasts are rarely expected to treat the one-sided matches due to the overall quality of the sides in the division.

Every few seasons, the rare 7-0 destruction or an exciting 5-5 draw could be seen, however, Such results are unbelievably unusual, though.

Portsmouth

and

Reading

played one of the greatest of these games during the early phases of the 2007/08 season, making it the first Premier League match with 11 goals.

Unexpectedly, the game saw just six netted goals by the 75th minute. The 75th-minute strike by Niko Kranjcar led to a consistent flow of goals in the final minutes of the match.

In the last fifteen minutes, both teams scored twice more, which saw the game end 7-4 and confirmed the improbable record.

Portsmouth coach Joe Jordan stated: "The first half of this match was arguably the best 45 minutes of this campaign, however, we allowed them to go in at the last minute. "I don't think that anybody would expect to exaggerate the score to 7-4, even with 2-2, but I think the best team won in total.

"analysts argue we're just playing one up front, but today it's proved to be three and nobody wants a hat-trick more than Benji."

Reading manager Steve Coppell stated:  "It's impossible to evaluate a game like that because you'll be there for a really long time if you try. "We managed 4 goals away from home and missed a shot for a penalty.

"We played a complete part in the match and I don't believe there would be many teams coming here this campaign and scoring 4 easily. "All sets of attackers seemed unstoppable at points, but both sets of defenders were disappointed at the scoreline.

"We have to change defensively, but I would prefer to be on the right end and that would have been fantastic for the unbiased spectator."

Borussia Dortmund vs Legia Warsaw: November 22, 2016

KR Reykjavik and Feyenoord, who had managed to create an amazing 14-goal game in the first phase of the continental tournament in 1969/70 as one of the oddest records for most goals in a soccer game, registered the most goals scored in a soccer match in a European Cup.

It's not shocking that Feyenoord in addition to setting the record of highest scored soccer game, advanced by twelve goals to two, and in the second leg, they scored a further four goals before they win the competition by winning against AC Milan and Celtic.

Although the tournament saw those results frequently because of the pure class difference among many of the squads.

Leeds United won 10-0 over Norwegian side Lyn in this series, and Real Madrid won 14-1 over the Cypriot team Olympiakos Nicosia on aggregate.

In the 2016/17 campaign, however, the German giant

Borussia Dortmund

and the Polish side

Legia Warsaw

leveled Feyenoord with an amazing 8-4 result.

For the 6 goals netted in the first 30 minutes, this match for a very long time should be remembered as one of the best affairs in European football. That was the first time ever in UEFA Champions League that Eight footballers netted in a single game.

Dortmund turned into the 4th side to net 8 goals in the Champions League behind Liverpool,

Chelsea

and

Real Madrid

The first game of any European tournament with 12 goals since Ajax beat Red Boys Differdange with fourteen goals at the old Uefa Cup on 3 October 1984 in Luxembourg.

There is just one game in the existence of the Champions League and the European Cup with more goals as one of the weirdest records for

most goals in a soccer game

; Feyenoord against KR of Iceland which ended 12-2.

In this game, during 76 seconds, Shinji Kagawa netted twice and broke the record of the fastest double in the history of the

Champions League

.
