Julen Lopetegui sacked as Sevilla manager

Sevilla has sacked manager Julen Lopetegui after a 4-1 home defeat against Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League.

Sevilla

announced on Wednesday that they have sacked Julen Lopetegui after a dreadful start to the season.

Sevilla lost 1-4 against

Dortmund

at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan in the

Champions League

on Wednesday. They have only one point after three games in the Champions League. Sevilla also is 17 in La Liga table with just one win after seven matches.

“Sevilla FC have relieved Julen Lopetegui of his duties as first-team coach following our clash against Borussia Dortmund”,

a statement read.

“It brings an end to a successful period with three magnificent campaigns in which the club achieved their objectives and a fourth season where unfortunately the results have not gone our way, with the club taking five points from a possible 21 in LaLiga.”

“In total, Julen took to the Sevilla FC dugout on 170 occasions: 121 LaLiga matches, 15 in the Copa del Rey, 16 in the Europa League, 17 in the Champions League and one in the UEFA Super Cup.”

“The club wish to underline and thank the Basque coach for his professionalism and hard work in the more than three years he spent at the club, as well as wishing him the best of luck and the best of success in his future endeavours”,

they added.

Lopetegui who managed Real Madrid for just three months in 2018 was appointed as Sevilla's manager in 2019. He won the Europe League with Sevilla in his first season.

Lopetegui reportedly has been approached about taking over at Wolves in Premier League. Wolves sacked Bruno Lage last week.

Reports in Spain suggest that Sevilla has been negotiating with Jorge Sampaoli and he is the favorite to replace Lopetegui. Sampaoli who left Marseille in July managed Sevilla in the 2016-2017 season.
